Job summary

Allstate Canada Group is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel, Business Law to join its Law & Regulation Department. This role involves providing strategic legal advice at the nexus of law, business and insurance, supporting product development, risk management, and distribution strategies.

The successful candidate will possess significant knowledge of corporate law, market conduct and regulatory compliance, and will collaborate with multiple stakeholders to drive compliant, innovative solutions

Qualifications

• Law degree from a Canadian law school or equivalent
• Member of the Law Society of Ontario, Barreau du Quebec or any other province in which Allstate operates
• 5+ years of Insurance and/or Corporate Law experience
• Experience in a highly regulated environment
• Strong knowledge of P&C insurance

Responsibilities

• Provide solutions-oriented strategic legal counseling to enable business units to achieve business objectives in compliance with applicable law and regulations.
• Support the Product team in the creation and development of insurance products and rate filings.
• Support Allstate Canada Group’s ongoing adoption of innovative technology and digital initiatives.
• Complex research as to applicability of pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority; summarize concisely and collaborate with other areas to determine impact on business.
• Support the Product and Distribution function with insurance related questions, including policy interpretation, distribution guidelines and opinions.
• Review and provide legal advice related to company documents, policy, practices, and procedures.
• Review regulatory requests, surveys and provide strategic guidance on market conduct compliance.
• Track regulatory guidance, updates and market trends and counsel the business on key issues.
• Liaise with Regulators and support the business with regulatory inquiries.
• Participate in industry associations and working groups including the IBC and CADRI.
• Support intellectual property, trademarks and brand protection matters.
• Support marketing and advertising activities, including reviews of product and/or program marketing and advertising, contests, and promotions.
