Job summary

Food Banks Canada is seeking an Officer of Government Relations and Advocacy to support planning and execution of advocacy initiatives across federal, provincial, and local levels.

Reporting to the VP, Advocacy & Research, you will work with the food bank network and external partners to advance long-term poverty and food insecurity solutions in Canada. This home-based role requires proximity to Ottawa, ON, and occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience in government relations, advocacy, politics, public affairs, stakeholder relations, or public policy.
  • Experience working with government stakeholders or elected officials is required.
  • Knowledge of parliamentary processes and Canadian government structures is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute government relations and advocacy strategies with Food Banks Canada.
  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, staff, public servants, and external partners.
  • Monitor federal, provincial, territorial, municipal, and Indigenous activities relevant to priorities.
  • Track legislation, parliamentary activity, government consultations, budgets, and policy announcements.
  • Support advocacy campaigns to raise awareness of food insecurity and drive policy change.
  • Coordinate meetings and engagement opportunities with officials and government representatives.
  • Support advocacy events, network engagements, and Days of Action.
  • Assist in developing advocacy training, resources, and tools for food banks and provincial associations.
  • Monitor and report on advocacy training and tools availability.
  • Ensure compliance with lobbying and reporting requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
