Job summary

Camunda is seeking a Backend Software Engineer for the Data Layer team to build and evolve the storage and query layer that powers Camunda 8's process data. You will work across relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch to ensure speed, accuracy, and availability at scale.

The role involves partnering with product management, design, QA, and support, and you will influence how our data layer evolves to meet customer needs while contributing to complex engineering initiatives.

Qualifications

• At least 4 years of experience as a backend engineer.
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL, or Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
• Ability to break down requirements and design concrete solutions.
• Experience investigating slow queries and index usage to root-cause production issues.
• Strong communication and collaboration in a remote-first environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer.
• Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives with Product Management.
• Evolve how process data is stored, retained, and exposed.
• Improve secondary storage systems for performance and scale.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident investigations.
