Job summary

Wesley in Hamilton, Ontario seeks a Relief Youth Worker to support youth in a 19-unit program. You will establish rapport, provide counseling, information, and advocacy, and work with community partners while adhering to program procedures.

The role is on-call with shifts including days, evenings, overnights and weekends. A CYW or SSW diploma and at least 1 year of experience with street involved youth are required; overnight availability is essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of CYW or SSW diploma.
  • At least 1 year experience with street involved/homeless youth.
  • Residential setting experience is an asset.
  • Commitment to flexible overnight/weekend hours.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention, First aid/CPR, ASIST certification.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a positive rapport with youth by being friendly and approachable.
  • Oversee the 19-unit program and residents, handling issues that may arise.
  • Engage youth with counseling, information, support and advocacy.
  • Adhere to program purpose, goals, and organizational policies.
  • Collaborate with community partners and ensure proper communication.
  • Be aware of other social service agencies in the Hamilton Region.
  • Ensure safety of staff and participants, including program access.
  • Complete statistics, client files, and daily log documentation.
  • Perform household cleaning responsibilities as required.
  • Provide crisis management support when necessary.

Are you the one we’re looking for?

We are seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Relief Youth Worker who demonstrates our values of compassion, accountability, responsiveness and empowerment; to our clients, families and each other.

The Relief Youth Worker will be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. You will have the opportunity to cover varying shifts throughout the week. Hours vary based on need. Shifts could include days, evenings, overnights, and weekends. We are seeking a candidate with flexible availability, and overnight availability.

This is a unionized, relief position. The rate of pay is $22.44 per hour. Scheduled on as-needed basis.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Establish a positive rapport with youth by being friendly, non-judgmental, non-intrusive, and approachable.
  2. Oversee the 19-unit program and residents, handling issues that may arise.
  3. Engage youth in a meaningful way providing counseling, information, support and advocacy.
  4. Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the purpose, goals, objectives, operational procedures of the program and organizational polices.
  5. Work with community partners in program and ensure proper communication and sharing of information.
  6. Maintain an awareness of other social service agencies in the Hamilton Region and a working knowledge of the legislation that affects the target population of the program.
  7. Ensure safety of team and safety of all program participants, including the entry to program.
  8. Complete statistics, client files, daily log, and other administrative documentation, as required.
  9. Complete household cleaning responsibilities as required.
  10. Provide crisis management support when necessary.
What you will bring:
  1. Minimum of C.Y.W. or S.S.W. diploma.
  2. At least 1 years’ experience working with street involved/homeless youth.
  3. Experience working in a residential setting is an asset.
  4. Commitment to flexible work schedule which includes overnight and weekend hours.
  5. Non-violent crisis intervention, First aid/CPR training, ASIST certification
