Job summary

Providence Health Care seeks Relational Security Officers (RSOs) to support safety and cultural safety in our hospital settings, with a focus on trauma-informed practice and equitable care. Training is provided to integrate de-escalation and communication skills, helping build respectful relationships with patients, residents, and visitors at St.

Paul’s Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. Successful candidates will complete five weeks of in-person training starting from the posted date.

Qualifications

  • Current BC Security Guard License, OFA Level I Certification, and Advanced Security Training Certification.
  • One year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols buildings and grounds using surveillance equipment; enforces security procedures and checks access points.
  • Responds to emergencies per hospital disaster plans and collaborates with medical staff.
  • Investigates disturbances and documents incidents per Protection Services procedures.
  • Provides security for patients and staff; offers escorts as needed and responds to requests for assistance.
  • Participates in security system programs, including staff photos and access information entry.
  • Liaises with fire, police and officials regarding security protocol and investigations.
  • Provides First Aid and maintains required documentation and supplies.
  • Maintains a daily log of events and prepares detailed security reports.

Job description

Relational Security Officers play a critical role in reducing workplace violence and promoting cultural safety. Training for RSOs is based on trauma-informed practice, integrating the knowledge of how people are affected by trauma, into the anticipation, desescalation, and prevention of aggression in healthcare settings. RSOs use effective and culturally informed communication to build healthy and positive relationships with patients, residents and visitors, creating a safe and welcoming environment for all. Relational Security Officers work at both St. Paul's Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

We are seeking applications from candidates who strive to make a difference in their communities; have a genuine interest in principles and practices of equity, diversity, and inclusion; are able to practice the principles of Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility; and strive to treat all with positive regard.

Successful candidates must be available for 5 weeks of full-time, in-person training, commencing at the start date, without exceptions. Only qualified candidates will be contacted.

What You Bring
Education

Current BC Security Guard License, OFA Level I Certification, Certification of Training Completion in Advanced Security Training. One year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Your Day to Day
  • Patrols buildings and grounds, including utilizing computerized surveillance equipment and video monitoring systems. Enforces regulations and security procedures. Identifies risks, safety and security hazards and takes appropriate action. Checks doors, windows and entrances, securing same to prevent unauthorized entrance by others.
  • Responds to emergencies such as the Providence Health Care Disaster Plan, fire, and physically aggressive patients; assesses the situation, consults with medical staff and others, and takes appropriate action as required.
  • Investigates, resolves and reports disturbances utilizing non-violent interventions. Documents and reports incidents in accordance with established Protection Services procedures.
  • Provides security for Providence Health Care patients, as requested by the patient care team, to maintain a safe and orderly workplace. Provides security escort for staff and patients as required. Responds to requests for assistance from staff, patients and the public.
  • Participates in photo identification and security system programs through methods such as taking staff photos, card access information and entering database information.
  • Liaises with fire, police and other related community officials regarding fire and security protocol, response, incidents and investigations per department guidelines.
  • Provides First Aid services to injured persons, completes required documentation and maintains supplies.
  • Maintains a daily log of events and prepares detailed reports.
