Job summary

Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse to assist in the Surgical Centre, scrubbing for major and minor procedures and delivering patient‑focused care under a Registered Nurse. Required are current CNO registration as an RPN, OR certification within the last year, BCLS, and recent Peri‑Anesthesia training.

Candidates should have 2–5 years’ experience in Surgical Suite or Ambulatory Services, strong teamwork and the ability to support patient flow and safe

Qualifications

• Current Registration Practical Nurse with a certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• OR certification from an accredited college program (acquired within the last year).
• BCLS is required.
• Successful completion of the Peri Anesthesia course from an Accredited college within the last 2 years.

Responsibilities

• Assist with scrubbing, circulating and retraction for procedures in the operating room.
• Support ambulatory ophthalmology patient care and pre/post-operative processes.
• Demonstrate ability to work independently and within an interprofessional team to maintain patient flow.
• Contribute to unit quality initiatives and adhere to safety standards.

The role is guided by code ofethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the RPN scrubs for major and minor surgical procedures and assists with patient care as established by the Standards of Nursing Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the standards of nursing care of this Hospital.

The Registered Practical Nurse role will be located at the TEHN Surgical Centre (located at 20 Wynford Dr.). The incumbent may be assigned to Michael Garron Hospital (825 Coxwell Avenue) as required.

Education

• Registered Practical Nurse with a current certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
• OR certification from an accredited college program (acquired within the last year) is required.
• BCLS is required.
• Successful completion of the Peri Anesthesia course from an Accredited college within the last 2 years required

Qualifications

• 2-5 years recent experience in a Surgical Suite/Ambulatory Services environment that includes assisting, scrubbing, circulating and/or providing retraction/abdominal thrust for procedures of the operating room, and ambulatory services.
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently within the Ambulatory services environment to maintain patient flow and be responsible for push/pulling stretchers into procedure rooms.
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to set up and care for the ambulatory ophthalmology patient that includes the pre-intra-post-operative patient experience is required.
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to set up and care in the diverse minor surgery procedures and demonstrates and anticipates the needs of the patients.
• Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions.
• Work is moderately heavy involving lifting, considerable walking, standing, bending, pushing and pulling of equipment and stretchers.
• Demonstrated ability in understanding the unique needs of the surgical patient.
• Demonstrated competence and willingness to work at the full scope of practice (as outlined by CNO).
• Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements.
• Demonstrated understanding of accountability-based practice.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Good work and attendance record required.
• Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Health Service (skills & abilities considered).
• Must be prepared to work all shifts of the Surgical Centre 0600, 0630.
• Ability to work within a team setting and comply to the team agreements.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated excellence in the provision of patient focused care.
• Good work and attendance record required.
