Job summary

St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) Hamilton is seeking a Practical Nurse registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario for the Chest Unit.

The role supports acute surgical patients in a 37-bed unit and collaborates with interprofessional teams to restore function in a fast-paced environment. The position offers regular, full-time hours at Charlton Campus with orientation and mandatory training, including IV therapy and pain management courses.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
• Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program with evidence of IV medication administration.
• Practical Nursing Diploma with IV medication administration certificate if not included in curriculum.
• Practical Nursing Certificate with medication administration and IV administration certificates.
• Minimum of one year's recent acute surgical/medical nursing experience.
• Current BCLS/HCP certification required.
• Demonstrated knowledge sensitivity and expertise in care of seniors and families.
• Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred.
• Must complete orientation as required.
• Epidural/PCA pain management course during orientation is required.
• Venipuncture competency required.
• Ability to function to the full scope of practice as per CNO.
• Ability to function in a changing fast-paced environment.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to set workload priorities.
• Commitment to customer service.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and organization skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
• Preference for thoracic/head and neck cardio-vascular surgery and plastic surgery experience.

Position Summary

The Chest Unit is a 37 bed acute surgical unit that provides care for a variety of surgical patients. The unit houses the Regional Thoracics Centre for our area as well as our Head and Neck and the Surgical Stepdown Units (SSDU). Specialty medical and surgical services support patients with newly diagnosed disease including thoracic and head and neck cancer reconstructive and plastic surgery and the care of patients with progressive illness. Our 8-bed SSDU provides care for acutely ill surgical patients including those undergoing thoracic orthopaedic urology gynecology GI and General Surgical procedures. Our highly skilled and dedicated interprofessional team provide patient and family focused care and work to restore and maintain function in a highly collaborative and therapeutic care environment.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario required AND
• Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program with evidence of IV medication administration as part of the basic educational curriculum OR
• Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program and IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program if this content was not included in the basic diploma educational curriculum OR
• Practical Nursing Certificate from an accredited college program a medication administration certificate and an IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program
• A minimum of one year's recent acute surgical/medical nursing experience is required
• Current BCLS/HCP certification required
• Demonstrated knowledge sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families
• Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred
• Must be able to complete the orientation as required
• Completion of the Epidural/PCA pain management therapy course during orientation is required
• Completion of the venipuncture skill and demonstrated competency is required
• Ability to function to the full scope of practice as per the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Ability to function in a changing fast paced environment
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and maintain good interpersonal relationships and set own workload priorities
