About this team:
Affiliated with the University of Toronto, our 18-bed psychiatric inpatient unit serves diverse populations, including adults (18+), geriatrics (65+), and antepartum/postpartum patients. We address a broad range of mental health diagnoses including mood, anxiety, psychosis and substance related disorders. Recognized as a leader in these areas, Mount Sinai is dedicated to a holistic approach where the "art" and "science" of nursing converge, ensuring comprehensive patient care. Our primary objective is to empower our patients to successfully transition back into the community, equipped to manage their health with confidence. We are committed to delivering patient care that not only addresses immediate health challenges but also fosters long-term wellness.

In this role you will:

  • Apply the nursing process in the provision of holistic patient and family-centred care that aligns with the patient’s identified goals for mental health and wellness.
  • Provide comprehensive and accurate documentation of relevant mental and physical health assessments i.e. Mental Status Exam, Suicide Risk Assessments (C-SSRS), head-to-toe assessments etc.
  • Anticipate, recognize, and address rapidly changing situations
  • Deliver comprehensive psychiatric nursing care to patients and families in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner
  • Utilize psychiatric nursing interventions such as one-to-one meetings, activity groups, supporting the use of distress tolerance, grounding and other psychotherapeutic skills
  • Collaborate with members of the interprofessional care team to develop and review patient care plans and work towards disposition planning
  • Provide health-related education to patients and families using effective teaching strategies that take into account the patient & family’s health literacy
  • Provide direct patient care in accordance with the CNO Standards and Sinai Health’s policy and procedures
Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

Mandatory

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Diploma preparation as an RPN in an accredited education program for Nursing
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Minimum 1-2 years recent experience in acute care or psychiatric nursing


Preferred

  • Non-violent crisis intervention/de-escalation certification or equivalent
  • Experience using an electronic health record system(s) is considered an asset


Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention skills including verbal de-escalation, redirection, distress tolerance and grounding techniques, including for the older adult population
  • Excellent health and clinical assessment skills
  • Demonstrated ability in providing quality patient-focused care and addressing the fundamental care needs of patients and their families
  • Demonstrated effective time-management and organizational skills in a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others including patients and their families
