Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority in Halifax is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support BPMH, medication reconciliation, and drug information processes across emergency, surgery, and inpatient units.

We require graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program and licensure in Nova Scotia (NSPR). Hospital experience and knowledge of sterile technique and chemotherapy are assets; strong communication and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
  • Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSPR) required
  • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, candidates actively pursuing licensure within NS will be considered
  • Pharmacy Practice Assistants may be considered when qualified candidates are unavailable
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital setting is an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and chemotherapy precautions is an asset
  • Knowledge of medication distribution systems and automation is an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Strong math, typing, and computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

  • Obtain BPMH for patients admitted from the ED to inpatient units or seen in clinics
  • Document BPMH in patient charts to create admission medication orders
  • Reconcile medication orders and communicate with staff and physicians
  • Direct team members to BPMH completion and verify accuracy of medication information

About the Opportunity

Responsibilities include obtaining a best possible medication history (BPMH) for patients being admitted from emergency department to an inpatient hospital unit or non-admitted patients; for patients seen in Surgery Preassessment clinic and for inpatient units. Conducting patient medication history interviews with patient and family, collecting patient information from the Drug Information System (or alternate source if not available), documenting BPMH in patient chart to be used to create admission medication orders, reconciling medication orders completed by another health care provider, communicating to staff and physicians regarding medication reconciliation, problem solving with the patient care team and pharmacy staff, medication reconciliation at all transitions of care. Medication reconciliation RPhT acts as a resource to staff and physicians, directs team members to ask for BPMH completion, confirms accuracy of patient medication information with community care providers or patient’s medical record.

About You

    • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, Pharmacy Practice Assistants may be considered
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
  • Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

  • Long assignment full-time position; 75 hours biweekly

Compensation and Benefits

(Pharmacy Practice Assistants: $25.37 - $30.20)
