Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority in Antigonish, NS seeks a Registered Pharmacy Technician to support safe, patient-centered care. You will prepare, package and dispense medications under a pharmacist's supervision, and engage in sterile and non-sterile compounding, unit dose distribution, and automation.

The role involves inventory control, medication reconciliation, and CIVA systems, with chemotherapy dose preparation and narcotics distribution as part of responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program.
  • Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSPR) required.
  • Candidates actively pursuing Pharmacy Technician licensure within Nova Scotia may be considered.
  • Pharmacy Practice Assistants may be considered if no qualified candidates are available.
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and chemotherapy is an asset.
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, and decentralized dispensing cabinets is an asset.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, package and dispense medication under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Compounding of sterile and non-sterile dosage forms.
  • Dispense drugs to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose.
  • Physician order entry; work with automation and CIVA systems.
  • Inventory control and medication reconciliation.
  • Prepare chemotherapy doses; distribute narcotics; participate in quality and patient safety initiatives.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Pharmacy Manager/Operations Manager, the Registered Pharmacy Technician participates in the provision of safe, competent, patient or family centered ethical care, ensuring the goals and needs of the patient are prioritized and individualized; prepares, packages and dispenses medication under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Responsibilities include compounding of sterile and non-sterile dosage forms, dispensing drugs to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose, physician order entry, working with automation, Inventory control, medication reconciliation, and CIVA systems. Preparation of chemotherapy doses, distributing narcotics and participating in quality programs and patient safety initiatives.

About You

    • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, candidates actively pursuing Pharmacy Technician licensure within the Province of Nova scotia will be considered
    • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, Pharmacy Practice Assistants may be considered
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medicationsKnowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
Hours
  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
Compensation and Benefits

Registered Technician: $30.52 - $34.43 hourly

(Pharmacy Practice Assistants: $25.37 - $30.20 hourly)
