The Opportunity

The Pharmacy Technician will collaborate with pharmacists and pharmacy practice assistants to ensure safe medication preparation and dispensing. Responsibilities include technical checks of medications, clarifying medication orders, narcotic destruction, precepting students, administering medications by injection (permit required), and providing education on medication devices. The technician will also conduct medication histories within Children’s and Women’s Health surgical units. All activities must adhere to federal and provincial legislation and professional standards, including those related to sterile and non-sterile compounding.

Hours of Work

0700-1500, 0800-1600, 1300-2100. Days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations. 75 hours bi-weekly.

Your Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician program (CCAPP) or an accredited pharmacy degree program, or currently enrolled in a bridging program.
  • Licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists, with annual malpractice insurance, or eligibility for licensure.
  • Practice within legal and ethical standards, demonstrating professionalism and adherence to policies.
  • Ability to participate in patient care, collaborating with healthcare professionals to meet medication-related needs.
  • Implement safe product distribution, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • Contribute to managing the drug distribution system for safe and effective medication delivery.
  • Engage in policies and procedures that promote quality and safety.
  • Knowledge of NAPRA Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Ability to perform final technical checks and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy automation and technology systems.
  • Knowledge of medication names, compounding techniques, and relevant legislation.
  • Accurate medication calculation skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

For candidates not yet licensed, an opportunity exists to complete the Eastern College Registered Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program, funded by IWK, in exchange for a return of service. Until licensure, candidates will be paid on the Pharmacy Practice Assistant scale.
