Job description

Duties:
  • Provide nursing care consistent with College Standards supportive and with patient treatment/rehabilitation goals for people with mental illness who come into conflict with the law
  • Develop and implement, in conjunction with interdisciplinary treatment team, creative treatment plans responsive to individual needs
  • Identify and coordinate provision of services and resources, in collaboration with affiliate and community partners, advocating to safeguard the person in care’s entitlements and rights
  • Lead and guide other nursing staff in daily work assignments, ensuring work is completed to standards
  • Provide patient care for the assigned case load.
  • Manage and direct the care of patients in crisis situations.
  • Recognize and intervene around emergent health problems.
  • Provide a safe, therapeutic environment including acute nursing care, crisis management and stabilization
  • Prepare and administer mediation as per policy and procedure.
  • Apply the Mental Health Act and all other legislation related to the practice of psychiatric nursing
  • Coordinate medical referrals for residents and facilitate medical clinic and follow up from the clinic
  • Group facilitator for adult learning.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
  • Provide direct assistance with symptom management (includes preparation and administering of medications, individual clinical relationship, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario is required.
  • BScN Preferred.
  • Certification in psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing considered an asset.
  • Clear understanding of the MHA and relevant legislation.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.
  • Have met the Royal nursing and hospital standards for mandatory education (CPR, WHIMIS, Fire Safety and Evacuation Training).
  • CPI and ASSIST training is considered an asset.
  • Able to meet the Standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Recognized leadership skills with the ability to build the inter-disciplinary team approach to delivering interventions.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional inter-disciplinary treatment team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check – vulnerable sector.
  • Valid drivers’ license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and incorporation of this legislation into practice (Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decision Act, PHIPA, and CSA).
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingualism an asset.\
