  • CPR Training - Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) - Level 1.

What is the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital

The Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (FPH) is a 190-bed secure facility located in Coquitlam, B.C., on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded core territory of the kwikwəƛ'əm First Nation (Kwikwetlem). We treat people who have been found not criminally responsible for a crime or unfit to stand trial due to a mental health disorder. We deliver services to patients using the "Clinical Program Model," which aims to deliver high-quality care to meet the specific needs of patients and is currently the best practice in health care.

What you'll do

RNs / RPNs are key members of the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (FPH) team who are working to transform services for this client population by implementing leading best practices in forensic mental health. Part of the BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services program, the FPH is a world leader in providing psychiatric care through its unique, multi-site health organization. Nurses are part of the interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals, who together, work in close partnership to provide specialized hospital and community-based services for adults with mental illness who are in conflict with the law. Usual duties include :

  • Providing direct care according to the care plan, including performing protocols and interventions, implementing behaviour management strategies, and meeting care recipient needs; applying approved techniques, procedures, and treatments; administering prescribed medication.
  • Recognizing and identifying signs and symptoms, detecting changes in patients' conditions; reporting and recording as indicated.
  • Collecting and documenting patient health care information; maintaining complete and accurate records of nursing observations, interventions, evaluations, and communications.
  • Planning and delivering direct care to promote physical and psychological well-being, including assessing clinical requirements, developing care plans, participating in assessments, involving patients and families, implementing and evaluating care plans, and revising them as needed.
  • Consulting with team members and other health care professionals, accessing resources for care planning, and ensuring continuity of care through liaison with physicians, families, and community resources.

What you bring

Qualifications :

  • Current registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Graduation from a recognized diploma program in Psychiatric Nursing or Nursing.
  • At least 1 year of recent experience in a forensic or acute psychiatric hospital setting, or equivalent education and experience.
  • CPR Training - Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) - Level 1.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples, and a commitment to anti-racism, cultural safety, and addressing health disparities.

Core Competencies :

  • Understanding of Indigenous-specific and systemic racism, with demonstrated leadership in fostering an environment of belonging. Embedding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility into work practices, fostering trust, and respecting Indigenous perspectives on health and wellness. Commitment to ongoing education and providing culturally relevant, holistic care.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political realities of settler-colonialism, and familiarity with relevant legislative and policy frameworks.

Skills & Knowledge :

  • Commitment to personal learning regarding Indigenous-specific racism and systemic oppression, sharing learning to motivate peers.
  • Foundational knowledge of the impacts of settler-colonialism, social determinants of health, and legislative obligations related to Indigenous health and anti-racism.

Wage : $42.34 - $56.83 per hour.
