Registered Nurse - Nursing Resource Unit

The NRU at CAMH is an internal float pool comprised of Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Program Assistants, who deliver exceptional client care across all inpatient units at CAMH, in the event of strategically planned and unplanned staff absences.

The NRU is currently seeking three (3) part-time, permanent Registered Nurses, who will report to the NRU Manager and Clinical Operations Coordination Leader. The successful applicant will complete a competency-based orientation and then apply and maintain practice-based competencies throughout all clinical assignments. You will provide high-quality nursing care to patients/clients and families and will engage in ongoing and structured learning throughout the NRU to achieve this goal.

You will be on-boarded and cross-trained to work across all inpatient clinical areas, including: acute, forensics, rehab, and specialty units (e.g., geriatrics, concurrent youth, medical withdrawal, extended observation).

As a member of an interprofessional team, you will provide client-centered mental health and addictions, as well as general nursing care. In addition, you will ensure the security and safety of the inpatient unit to which you are assigned, and practice in accordance with professional regulatory standards, CAMH Policies and Professional Practice Model, and the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.

Your skills include the ability to make behavioral observations; perform ongoing physical and mental status assessments; monitor the client’s response to pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions; develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional client-centred care plans; and effectively communicate with other team members. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.

This position is located at the Queen Street site and involves 12-hour shifts (days and nights), as well as weekend work.

The successful candidate must be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate is also required. Preference will be given to candidates who possess, or are currently pursuing a B.Sc.N and CAN certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and have demonstrated experience in mental health nursing. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to develop the Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team. Effective leadership, decision-making including a demonstrated ability to think critically about issues along with organizational and problem solving skills are required. You have demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour. Psychiatric/mental health nursing experience with individuals with mental illness and/or addictions is required. You have demonstrated interest in continuous learning and professional development. The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary. Computer literacy is required. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

These three (3) part-time, permanent positions are a 0.5 commitment, which may be subject to change as per the Collective Agreement. Additional hours may be available based on operational needs. These positions are part of the ONA Bargaining Unit.
