Job summary

Alberta Health Services in Edmonton Clinic seeks a Registered Nurse (RN) for the KEC Epilepsy Clinic in Neurosciences. The RN will work within an interdisciplinary team, provide patient- and family‑centered care, support epilepsy management, review blood work, administer education, and coordinate care across physicians and community resources.

This Regular Part Time role requires 2+ years of Neurosciences RN experience, CRNA eligibility, BCLS-HCP, and strong communication.

Job description

This exciting position is within the KEC Epilepsy Clinic for the Neurosciences portfolio. This specialized area of neurological nursing requires excellent self-directed, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Registered Nurse (RN) will work as a collaborative member of the interdisciplinary team and requires strong leadership skills to uphold the principles and standards of the patient and family-centered care delivery model. The RN will offer ongoing support and education to patients and their families. Tasks include assisting patients with concerns related to management of their Epilepsy including medication side effects, prescriptions, reviewing and discussing blood work and investigations, independently, and in collaboration with physicians, as well as documentation of interventions.The Epilepsy Nurse assists patients with epilepsy and their families in gaining and maintaining an active and fulfilling lifestyle. The Epilepsy Nurse will support Managing the waitlist , booking admissions for the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and coordinating the Epilepsy surgical Program as a collaborative member of the Epilepsy Team. The RN acts as a liaison between patients, physicians and community resources as required. The RN must possess excellent telephone triage and listening skills as a large portion of nursing are via telephone. The RN is part of a team and will be cross-trained in the program to support other RNs.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program.Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Additional Required Qualifications:

A minimum of 2 years regularly working as an RN in Neurosciences either in-patient or ambulatory, within the last 5 years. Strong communication skills utilizing a variety of modalities (i.e., verbal, written, active listening) and ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of specific patient, relay patient information to primary health care provider(s) on and off-site, in a timely, concise, accurate manner, in order to facilitate the primary health care provider's treatment decisions. Must have the ability to push, pull, and lift equipment of up to 20 lbs. Must be able to participate in patient assessments, moving and handling, transferring patients, walking and standing. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods. Knowledge and ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook is required and be competent Connect Care.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of one-year regular Epilepsy experience in a health care setting desired within the past 2 years. BLS Certified. Experience of Case Management an asset. Experience of contributing to the quality improvement process by working with others to identify and implement areas for improvement and improved service delivery and patient outcomes.
