Purpose of Job

We are sourcing for Registered Nurses (RNs) to service remote communities within Northern Manitoba supporting Indigenous Services Canada.

We have 1 to 2-week coverage assignments available for ongoing full-time work.

Positions are eligible for overtime, and a travel allowance is provided.

Community health nursing in remote Indigenous communities is an excellent opportunity for clinicians looking to make a true difference, expand their skills, grow their critical thinking abilities, and practice in a dynamic and stimulating environment.

We are happy to support candidates with the labour mobility process to obtain their Manitoba/Alberta licenses.

Key Responsibilities

As a primary care community health nurse, the duties include:

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and the nurse in charge to deliver care within an expanded scope of practice. The community health nurse thoroughly assesses patients of all ages presenting with varied needs, uses critical thinking and clinical decision support resources to isolate priority health needs, negotiates a treatment plan with the client, and collaborates with providers for definitive treatment plans. This includes newborn deliveries, treatment of minor acute illnesses and injuries, and conducting general treatment clinics.
  • Implement the nursing process by employing skills in primary survey, assessment, nursing diagnosis, counseling, and health education according to the clinical care pathways.
  • Administer interventions and monitor their effectiveness to address clients' psychological, spiritual, and physical comfort and safety needs.
  • Deliver holistic, culturally competent community care to remote and/or isolated First Nations communities in Manitoba.
  • Provide ethical, high-quality, and competent care to patients of all ages and acuity levels, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
  • Communicate effectively to obtain subjective and objective assessment data and complete an in-depth physical examination using advanced assessment skills.
  • Within the scope, rely on evidence-based guidelines using the national care pathways and other provided resources to deduce diagnoses, negotiate and implement care plans, provide health teaching, and assure adequate follow-up to evaluate care effectiveness.
  • Intervene in the contexts of unstable clinical situations, effectively facilitate communication with the local and remote consulting teams, and participate in planning, organizing, and implementing medical evacuation as needed.
  • Document care according to the guidelines, including using the EMR (electronic medical records).
  • Manage demanding situations according to protocol and involve the necessary support teams.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements (must haves):

  • Current College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) RN license.
  • Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
  • Valid Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
  • Valid International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certificate.
  • An active driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • 2 years of full-time nursing in the last five years in the emergency room, intensive care unit, or as a community health nurse in a remote/rural area.
  • Additional critical care nursing experience (cardiovascular intensive care unit, post-anesthesia unit) is an asset.

Preference For

  • An elevated level of knowledge and the ability to interpret relevant medical and operational guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Collaboration with others to achieve the best results and deliver the most value.
  • Holding others accountable and expecting others to do the same.

Work Conditions

Where you will be working, your work schedule, and other essential information:

  • Onsite accommodation provided (fully furnished residence)
  • Onsite transportation provided.
  • Daily fare for subsistence provided.
  • Daily schedule varies from nursing station to nursing station. Shifts are 10 hours long, with overtime possibilities and on-call.
  • Charter flights from Winnipeg, St. Andrews, Pine Dock, Thompson, & The Pas are available.
