Responsibilities

Position Overview

Reporting to the National Safety Director, the Western Region Health and Safety Manager will support Onyx Group operations throughout Western Canada. This role is responsible for promoting a safe and healthy work environment, supporting employees and contractors, and ensuring compliance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements.

The successful candidate will work closely with managers, supervisors, workers, and other members of the Health and Safety team to strengthen our safety culture and support the consistent application of company programs across the region.

Role Location

We are focused on finding the best candidate for this role and are open to applicants located in British Columbia or Alberta.

The successful candidate will support operations across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and must be willing and able to travel throughout the region as required. The candidate’s primary work location will be discussed during the recruitment process based on operational needs and the candidate’s location.

Responsibilities

• Support the implementation and ongoing improvement of health and safety programs across Western Canada.
• Maintain compliance with applicable provincial occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and industry best practices.
• Maintain COR program requirements for Manitoba operations through the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba (CSAM) and for Alberta operations through the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA).
• Conduct workplace and job-site inspections, audits, and assessments to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and verify that appropriate controls are implemented.
• Provide managers and supervisors with guidance and support related to hazard assessments, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and safe work practices.
• Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses; identify contributing factors; and support the development and completion of corrective actions.
• Prepare and support suitable return-to-work and modified-duty plans in collaboration with operational leaders and other internal stakeholders.
• Prepare clear, accurate, and timely incident investigation reports and supporting documentation.
• Review and update health and safety policies, procedures, programs, forms, and training materials.
• Deliver and coordinate health and safety education, orientation, and training.
• Monitor safety performance, identify trends, and recommend opportunities for improvement.
• Oversee and maintain contractor-compliance platforms such as ISNetworld, Avetta, and similar systems.
• Build effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
• Promote worker participation and support a positive, prevention-focused health and safety culture.

Qualifications

• A degree or diploma in occupational health and safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience are preferred.
• A minimum of three years of health and safety experience in a management, advisory, or similar role, preferably within the construction or service industry.
• Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and best practices applicable within Western Canada.
• CSAM and ACSA COR auditor qualifications are preferred.
• Experience supporting COR programs, conducting audits, and completing workplace inspections and incident investigations.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with workers, supervisors, senior leaders, clients, and external stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with geographically dispersed teams.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Willingness and ability to travel throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba as required.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet company driving requirements.
