The Work

The Regional Director will be responsible for originating and analyzing new loan opportunities, building and developing new relationships, and working with the credit and funding teams to ensure proper deal flow from inception to closing.

The incumbent will primarily analyze and structure conventional and construction (both conventional and insured) loan opportunities across various asset classes, assessing their viability according to Equitable’s underwriting and pricing parameters, and making appropriate recommendations.

They will liaise with senior executives, procure large commercial mortgage transactions with direct clients, mortgage brokers, and new partners, prepare loan summaries, issue loan proposals, inspect properties, and provide limited account management support to the underwriting group. This role involves cross-functional challenges and is key to the success of the commercial group in meeting annual volume targets.

The core responsibilities include:

  1. Analyzing and structuring commercial credit opportunities for all conventional commercial mortgage products, presenting to senior management, ensuring transactions align with lending guidelines, ROE requirements, and procedures. Communicating daily with origination, credit, funding teams, management, staff, and external contacts (partners, brokers, clients, appraisers, etc.).
  2. Meeting with external contacts to procure new transactions, attending industry events to promote EQB’s mortgage program, coordinating marketing initiatives, and identifying new loan opportunities with the origination team.
  3. Managing deal flow to meet deadlines with the underwriting team.
  4. Traveling for site inspections or presentations.

Requirements include:

  • Post-secondary education in business or finance; specialization in Real Estate is an asset.
  • Minimum of 6 years of commercial mortgage experience in analysis, account management, or underwriting.
  • Experience with institutional construction lending.
  • Knowledge of secured lending, regulatory and macroeconomic factors affecting the market.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial statement analysis skills.
  • Understanding of AML/ATF regulations and legal documentation across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Excellent organization, time management, negotiation, sales, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, with strong communication skills.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.

Job Complexities and Challenges

  • Requires a mature self-starter with sound judgment and a solid credit background. The role involves complex applications requiring creative thinking and proactive problem solving, following policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The incumbent must handle multiple external partner transactions with unique complexities, drawing on product knowledge to assess suitability.
