Job description

Journeyperson & 3rd or 4th Year Apprentice Refrigeration Technicians

Based in Winnipeg | Working wherever the job takes you (Manitoba + beyond)

When Everything's on the Line, You're the One They Call.

Most people don't think about refrigeration.

Until a supermarket is about to lose six figures in product.

Until an entire store operation is depending on one technician to find the problem and get it running again.

That's when refrigeration stops being a trade and becomes a responsibility.

At Gateway Mechanical, we're hiring Journeyperson and 3rd/4th Year Apprentice Refrigeration Technicians who thrive under pressure and take pride in solving problems that others can't.

We're especially interested in technicians with supermarket refrigeration experience. The people who understand rack systems, store renovations, retrofits, commissioning, and the realities of working in live retail environments where downtime isn't an option.

If you're the type who takes ownership, thinks independently, and refuses to cut corners, keep reading.

Who We Are (No Corporate Fluff)

  • Around since 1968

  • 40,000+ service calls annually

  • Built on long-term tradespeople who know their craft

  • Backed by serious technical support when the challenges get complex

Bottom line: You're never alone, but nobody's holding your hand either.

The Job

This isn't just service.

This isn't just projects.

It's both.

Because the best refrigeration technicians can troubleshoot a critical breakdown on Monday and execute a complex project installation on Tuesday.

You'll:

  • Move between service calls and project work

  • Work on supermarket refrigeration projects, retrofits, and store renovations

  • Install systems that need to be right the first time

  • Commission and startup equipment with confidence

  • Walk into challenging situations and find solutions

One day you're preventing a grocery store from losing thousands in product.

The next you're helping deliver a major refrigeration project that has to meet schedule, budget, and quality expectations.

Supermarket Experience Required

Let's be clear.

Supermarket refrigeration is a specialized trade within a trade.

We're looking for technicians who have experience with:

  • Rack systems

  • Store remodels and renovations

  • Equipment replacements

  • New supermarket construction

  • Controls integration and commissioning

Anyone can swap parts.

Not everyone can manage a supermarket project while coordinating with multiple trades, tight deadlines, live stores, and demanding customers.

That's the level we're hiring for.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Diagnose problems quickly and accurately

  • Repair and maintain commercial and industrial HVACR systems

  • Install and retrofit refrigeration equipment

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications

  • Support supermarket refrigeration projects from install through commissioning

  • Complete digital documentation accurately and professionally

  • Build customer confidence through technical expertise and reliability

What Makes You Stand Out

You:

  • Don't wait around for direction

  • Stay calm when things go sideways

  • Think through problems instead of guessing

  • Show up ready to work

  • Communicate clearly with customers and teammates

  • Take safety seriously

  • Know when to ask for support and when to take ownership

Because in this trade, your reputation follows you.

Good technicians find jobs. Great technicians get requested by name.

What You'll Need

Journeyperson Refrigeration Certification or Registered Apprentice

Minimum 3+ years of refrigeration experience or strong apprentice progression

Experience with rack systems, store remodels, retrofits, and commissioning

Ability to participate in an on-call rotation

Valid Class 5 Driver's License

Why Gateway?

Because skilled technicians stay where they're respected.

  • Build expertise across both service and projects

  • Work on major supermarket refrigeration systems throughout Manitoba and beyond

  • Join a team that pulls its weight

  • Be recognized and rewarded for results, not politics

The Bottom Line

If you have supermarket refrigeration project experience, you already know this isn't work for everyone.

You understand the pressure.
