Job summary

Alberta Health Services' Foothills Medical Centre is seeking a Recreation Therapist I to join the Allied Health team. The role supports acute care patients with neurology needs, performing assessment, treatment and family-centered care in a busy tertiary setting.

FTE 1.00, day shifts, two-week shift blocks, Saturdays/Sundays off. Responsibilities include evidence-based recreation therapy, collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues, rounds and family conferences, and ongoing professional

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy or related field with active or eligible ATRA registration.
  • Experience providing Recreation Therapy in an acute hospital setting within the last year.
  • Minimum 6 months in the last 2 years in adult neurology.
  • Current BLS Health Care Providers Level C CPR certification within the last 12 months.
  • Ability to physically manage repetitive lifting and transferring of patients and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessment, treatment, education and management of clients' progress.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team and participate in rounds and family conferences.
  • Deliver evidence-based recreation therapy aligned with patient- and family-centred care.
  • Contribute to planning and adapting therapy within a tertiary neurology program.

Job description

Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) is an Acute Care hospital with over 1,100 beds. It is the Trauma Centre for Southern Alberta, Eastern British Columbia and Western Saskatchewan. FMC has a Neuro Tertiary Unit as well as the majority of In-Patient Neurological services in Calgary.The present caseload for this position is in Tertiary Neurology, with the potential for coverage on the transition units as required. The caseload for all positions within the Allied Health department may be subject to change based on operational considerations.This position is physically demanding and requires repetitive lifting and transferring of patients and/or equipment. Description:

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies.Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience within the last year providing Recreation Therapy interventions to adult patients in an acute hospital setting.Minimum 6 months experience (1.0 FTE) within the last 2 years working in the area of adult neurology.BLS for Health Care Providers Level C CPR certification issued within the last 12 months prior to commencement of employment.Ability to physically manage repetitive lifting and transferring of patients and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience within the last year working in a tertiary or community setting.Continuing education in the area of Neuro Rehab.
