Job summary

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a minimum of one year of recent experience with older adults with complex medical, cognitive, and behavioral needs, including dementia.
  • Experience implementing physiotherapy treatment plans and facilitating therapeutic exercise.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct client care under therapist direction, including delegated treatment plans and modalities.
  • Carry out activities such as pool therapy and progression of exercises within therapist-provided parameters.
  • Support indirect care through setup for treatment activities, equipment coordination, and inventory control.

Job description

The Therapy Assistant works under the direction of Physical Therapists providing rehabilitation to clients. Provides direct client care as assigned by therapists that may include carrying out delegated treatment plans, application of hot/cold modalities, pool therapy, supervision and progression of exercise programs within the parameters provided by the physical therapist, therapeutic group activities, and of activities of daily living. Assists with the delivery of indirect care by participating in the setup for treatment activities, facilitating client participation in treatment, coordinating equipment loan procedures, providing inventory control, and performing other support duties as required. Currently assigned to the Older Adults team but may be subject to change based on operational requirements.

Description:

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Required Qualifications:

Additional Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a minimum of one year of recent experience working with older adults with complex medical, cognitive, and behavioral needs, including dementia and other neurocognitive disorders. Experience implementing physiotherapy treatment plans, facilitating therapeutic exercise and mobility programs, and supporting patient rehabilitation under the direction of a physiotherapist is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to optimize patient safety, function, and quality of life. Must be able to demonstrate ability to work independently and demonstrate competence in progressing treatment programs within defined TA progression parameters within individual and group treatment sessions. Effective written, verbal, communication, and computer skills, including familiarity with Connect Care are required. The successful incumbent will be capable of performing lifts, transfers, repositioning, and other physically demanding activities associated with this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous work as a Therapy assistant in a Tertiary rehabilitation hospital is a strong asset. Experience with Connect Care is preferred.
