Job summary

Alpha House in Alberta is seeking a Recovery Coach for our Detox program, term until July 2027, 3–11pm, Sun to Wed. The position pays $24.95 per hour and involves admissions, case planning, reporting, and support in achieving recovery goals.

You will work with the nursing team on withdrawal management, present health education to clients, and help ensure program compliance, while demonstrating compassion and ethical practice.

Qualifications

• Minimum two-year program in Addictions, Social Work or related from a publicly funded post-secondary institution or in progress.
• Front line experience with indigenous and/or vulnerable populations and a desire to work with people who may be disadvantaged or have mental health challenges.
• Class 5 driver license with clean five-year driving abstract and three years of driving experience.
• Understanding of addictions including withdrawal management, harm reduction, stages of change and trauma-informed care.
• Tolerant, non-judgmental with compassion and empathy toward homeless and those with addictions or mental health challenges.
• Crisis management, problem solving, rapport-building and advocacy skills.
• Excellent oral and written English communication and ability to facilitate presentations.
• Team player with strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with respect and discretion.
• Resourceful, flexible and adaptable.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Ethically responsible practices with staff and clients and understanding of Protection of Persons in Care Act.
• Comfortable driving a large passenger van.
• Ability to assist clients physically and lift etc.
• Ability to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Search.
• Willingness to have privacy and lifting training.

Responsibilities

• Maintain daily case notes and records of client psychosocial state and treatment plan.
• Support clients in reaching goals and link to community resources.
• Collaborate with nursing to ensure safe withdrawal management.
• Model Alpha House values and act as a positive ambassador.
• Provide educational presentations on health, addictions and homelessness.
• Ensure program residents follow requirements.
• Perform daily chores including cleaning and laundry.
• Attend team meetings and participate in program evaluation.
• Reference policies and procedures as needed.
• Transport clients in an agency vehicle as needed.
• Ensure compliance with MSDS, OH&S, WHMIS etc.
• Assist in Shelter and other programs as needed.

About the Role:

The Recovery Coach works in our Detox program and is responsible for the development and implementation of a case plan that assists the client in increasing their overall stability and resiliency, as well as supporting clients in meeting their short or long-term recovery goals. Some of the responsibilities would include:

• Completing daily admissions including monitoring and responding to client needs
• Completing My Recovery Plan
• Demonstrate ethically responsible practice with staff and clients alike
• Daily case notes and record keeping, related to the client’s psycho-social state and treatment plan, including assessing their current place in the stages of change model
• Case Manager and support clients in reaching achievable and realistic goals, making refers to community resources, assisting in the completion of treatment applications and attaining appropriate funding
• Works in partnership with the nursing team to ensure safe withdrawal management
• Role model Alpha House’s values and be a positive ambassador when interacting with the public, partners and businesses
• Providing educational presentations to clients on topics related to health, addictions and homelessness
• Ensures clients residing in the program are following program requirements
• Completing daily chores, including cleaning (including bodily fluids) and laundry
• Participation and attendance at regular team meetings and in program evaluation as needed
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate sources
• Transporting of clients, in an Agency vehicle, as needed
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (MSDS, OH&S, WHMIS etc.)
• Assist in the Shelter and other programs as needed

About You

• A minimum of a two-year program in Addictions, Social Work or related, from a Public Post-Secondary Educational Institution, or in progress towards one
• Front line experience working with indigenous and or vulnerable populations and a desire to work with people who may be socially disadvantaged or have mental health challenges
• At least a class 5 (Non GDL) driver license, a clear five year driver’s abstract, and three years of driving experience
• An understanding of addictions including withdrawal management, harm reduction, stages of change, trauma informed-care, crisis management, crisis counseling, recovery orientated systems of care and impact of mental health issues.
• Must be tolerant, non-judgmental with a high degree of compassion and empathy towards the homeless and those struggling with addictions and or mental health
• Proven crisis management, problem solving skills, rapport-building and advocacy skills
• Excellent oral and written English communication skills and the ability to facilitate presentations
• Team Player, strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate showing respect and dignity as well as with discretion and maintain confidentiality of clients
• High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptable.
• Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
• Have ethically responsible practices with staff and clients alike including a thorough understanding and appreciation of the Protection of Persons in Care Act
• Comfortable driving a large passenger Van
• Be able to physically assist clients from prone to sitting or standing, and vice versa
• Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Search, valid within the last six months, that does not contain any results material to the position
• Ability to obtain Privacy and lift t raining
