Job summary

WSP is seeking a System Safety Specialist to help shape safer transportation systems on rail and transit projects. The role supports hazard management, risk assessment, safety requirements definition, and safety documentation across internal teams.

Hybrid work with no travel; not client-facing, focusing on design, Human Factors, RAM+S and project teams. You will apply Transport Canada requirements, CSA CMREA, and EN standards, with emphasis on clear technical writing and collaboration across

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, such as Functional Safety, Industrial, Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in system, functional, or technical safety; internship or co-op experience may be considered.
  • Competency in functional and technical safety, including hazard identification and analysis.
  • Experience or familiarity with qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative risk assessment methods, including HAZID, SHA, FTA, FMECA, and risk matrices.
  • Good technical writing, communication, and analytical skills, with the ability to prepare clear safety documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Knowledge of Transport Canada regulations, CSA CMREA, and EN 50126/50128/50129 is an asset.
  • Experience in rail and transit projects and eligibility for P.Eng. designation are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and maintenance of hazard management processes, Hazard Logs, risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and Safety Requirements.
  • Collaborate with design, Human Factors, RAM+S, and other project teams to define, document, and track risk control actions and safety requirements.
  • Assist with hazard identification and analysis activities using recognised approaches such as HAZID, SHA, FTA, FMECA, and risk matrices.
  • Review safety evidence to help demonstrate compliance with applicable safety requirements, standards, and regulations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of System Safety Reports, Safety Case artefacts, and related technical documentation.
  • Apply relevant safety standards and regulations, including Transport Canada requirements, CSA CMREA, and EN 50126/50128/50129, throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Strengthen project outcomes through clear technical writing, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Help advance safe, dependable rail and transit systems that support communities and improve mobility.
