Job description

Position Title: Quality Control Manager
Salary & Benefits: $100,000-120,000
Position Status: Current vacancy
Location: Ottawa, ON
Work Model: ONSITE

The Quality Control Manager plays a mission‑critical role in ensuring that every product leaving the facilities meets the highest standards of conformity, reliability, and compliance. Leading both the Quality Management System (QMS) and the Quality Control function, this position safeguards customer, contractual, and regulatory requirements across a complex value stream that includes metal cutting and forming, welding, machining, assembly, and paint/finish operations. The Quality Control Manager is a hands‑on, systems‑driven leader who strengthens process capability, drives continuous improvement, and ensures right‑first‑time workmanship in support of our national‑security mission.

Responsibilities:
Quality Management System (QMS) Leadership
  • Own, maintain, and continuously improve the QMS, including document control, internal audits, management review, metrics, and CAPA processes
  • Ensure compliance with customer, contractual, regulatory, and defence‑sector requirements
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives that enhance process capability and reduce escapes, rework, and cost of poor quality
Quality Control & Inspection
  • Lead receiving, in‑process, and final inspection activities across fabrication, welding, machining, assembly, and finishing operations
  • Oversee test verification and ensure objective, accurate, and complete quality records
  • Develop inspection plans and acceptance criteria aligned with drawings, specifications, and contract requirements
  • Ensure proper measurement methods, calibrated equipment, and inspection tooling are used
Nonconformance Management & Problem Solving
  • Drive structured root‑cause analysis using 5‑Why, Fishbone, 8D, and other proven methodologies
  • Lead containment, corrective, and preventive actions for internal, supplier, and customer nonconformances
  • Verify effectiveness of corrective actions and ensure timely closure of CAPA activities
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain to align quality objectives with production flow, cost targets, and reliability requirements
  • Support contract review, design review, and quality planning for new or modified products
  • Ensure changes are assessed, approved, and flowed down through controlled documentation and work instructions
Supplier Quality
  • Work with Procurement to approve and maintain the approved vendor list
  • Review subcontractor performance and support supplier corrective actions
  • Define and support purchase order quality requirements, source inspection, and receiving inspection
Audits, Visits & External Interfaces
  • Prepare for and host customer, government, and third‑party quality audits and site visits
  • Coordinate audit responses, evidence packages, and follow‑up actions
  • Support resolution of customer quality issues, including containment and corrective actions
Leadership & Staff Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop QC/QA personnel, including inspectors and technicians
  • Establish training, qualification, and competency requirements
  • Provide onboarding briefings and ongoing skills development
Performance Reporting
  • Report quality performance to leadership using actionable KPIs (scrap/rework, escapes, audit findings, COPQ, CAPA closure, supplier performance)
  • Use data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities

The ideal candidate for the Quality Control Manager role is a disciplined, technically grounded quality professional with deep experience in metal fabrication and machining environments. You will bring at least five (5+) years of hands‑on quality control expertise, including inspection, nonconformance management, and CAPA execution, along with demonstrated ownership of a Quality Management System. You are fluent in engineering documentation — drawings, GD&T, BOMs, specifications — and understand how to translate requirements into practical inspection plans and controlled processes. With working knowledge of welding and fabrication quality fundamentals, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate clearly through procedures, reports, and corrective actions, you are a leader who leads with both rigor and collaboration. You pride yourself on coaching and developing teams, partnering effectively across Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain, and maintain the professionalism required to support audits, customer interactions, and regulated‑industry expectations.

You must be eligible for Government Security Clearance

What will make you stand out:
  • Direct background in defence, aerospace, or other highly controlled manufacturing environments, including customer/government quality engagement.
  • Lead Auditor training, ISO 9001/AS9100 familiarity, or ASQ certifications such as CQE, CQA, or CQM/OE.
  • Experience qualifying vendors, managing scorecards, driving SCARs, and ensuring flow‑down of requirements through the supply base.
  • Knowledge of traceability/record‑retention practices that strengthen process control and product reliability.
