Job summary

Powerhouse Controls in Cambridge, Canada, is seeking a Quality Assurance Specialist to help ensure the quality of NEXIA software releases. You will design and execute test plans, build regression suites, and contribute to automation efforts, collaborating with developers, analysts, and project managers in an Agile environment.

Responsibilities

• Test existing and future software largely built on the .NET framework.
• Create and implement detailed test plans, test cases, protocols, and procedures.
• Assist with ticket writing in the issue tracking system.
• Perform comprehensive manual testing of features and bug fixes.
• Build and run automated regression tests for ongoing and new projects.
• Troubleshoot automation software and performance issues.
• Identify issues/risks in testing and present alternatives to alleviate them.
• Plan and prioritize testing activities.
• Review bug reports and highlight problem areas.

Position Overview:

Ensuring the quality of our NEXIA software releases is essential to delivering reliable, high-performing solutions to our users. This role plays a pivotal part in safeguarding that standard by rigorously testing bug fixes, new features, and major initiatives—both manually and through automation. By developing regression test suites for critical system modules, this position helps prevent disruptions and ensure long-term stability. The creation of clear test documentation and UAT hand-off guides, empower cross-functional teams, and streamlines the release process. From shaping requirements to defining acceptance criteria and supporting final deployment, this role is deeply embedded in every phase of the software development lifecycle, making it a cornerstone of our product excellence.

What You’ll Do:

Testing & Quality Assurance

• Testing of all existing and future software, largely built on the .NET framework.
• Create and implement detailed test plans, test cases, protocols, and procedures.
• Assist with ticket writing in the issue tracking system
• Perform comprehensive manual testing of features and bug fixes on an ongoing basis.
• Build and run automated regression tests for ongoing and new software projects.
• Troubleshoot automation software and performance issues.
• Identify issues/risks in testing and present alternatives to alleviate or resolve them.
• Plan and prioritize testing activities.
• Review software bug reports, highlight problem areas and recommend innovative solutions.

Automation & Framework Development

• Create and implement a new QA Automation framework.
• Proactively recommend new features and improvements to optimize test automation and coverage.
• Create and maintain system metrics to track test results.

Systems Understanding & Architecture

• Understand the intricacies, relationships, and dependencies of NEXIA software systems to test the applications effectively.
• Identify and raise risks or gaps early—contribute to architecture reviews with a field-ready perspective.
• Work alongside Implementation and Development teams to help design technically sound solutions.

Collaboration & Communication

• Collaborate with the development team, business analysts, and project managers.
• Communicate with managers, project sponsors, and users regarding the status of specific projects, features, tests, and issues.
• Work in an Agile environment and participate in daily stand-up meetings.

What You Bring:

MUST-HAVE

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent and/or related work experience
• Strong presentation and communication skills.
• Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or diagram form.
• Apply logical and technical concepts to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Work in a collaborative team environment.
• Ability to interact and work effectively with superiors, peers, developers, engineers, consultants, software vendors, end-users.
• Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to others inside and outside the organization.

NICE-TO-HAVE

• Experience deploying or supporting interoperability platforms, such as middleware or traffic control systems.
• Familiarity with MES, WMS, or ERP integrations.
• Experience with FT Optix, Ignition, Kepware, or NEXIA.
• Exposure to scripting (Python, JavaScript) for logic, data parsing, or UI/UX adjustments.
