Job Purpose
The Quality Assurance Manager (QAM) is responsible for ensuring that the products manufactured meet the company's quality and safety standards. This role involves developing and maintaining quality management systems, conducting regular inspections and audits, and implementing corrective actions when necessary. The manager works closely with various departments to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards, and to continuously improve the quality of the products. The QAM monitors product and employee practices throughout the production facility via direct supervision of the Quality Control (QC) Manager / QC Supervisor, and maintains technical production information to uphold Food Safety and Quality standards.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensure the products manufactured meet the company’s finished product quality and food safety expectations, as per customer and regulatory requirements.
- Manage and lead the day-to-day activities of the QC Manager/QC Supervisor, and document control team.
- Interact with regulatory personnel, food safety auditors, and customers to maintain positive relationships and ensure rapid corrective actions through leadership and timely documentation.
- Perform internal audits according to the internal audit calendar. Review non-conformances from audits to identify areas of improvement.
- Keep up-to-date with all third-party requirements including BRC, Organic, Kosher, and RSPO.
- Investigate non-conformances and provide corrective and preventative actions. Collaborate with other departments to address audit findings.
- Manage environmental monitoring and allergen validation programs, escalate non-conformances to the Quality Director.
- Support quality issues on the plant floor, including investigations on product quality and quality hold items for the Quality Director.
- Conduct mock recall and traceability exercises.
- Participate in customer visits or third-party audits.
- Manage customer complaints investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions. Keep the Quality Director informed of serious issues.
- Conduct risk assessments of new suppliers and raw materials with the Purchasing Department.
- Provide training to employees as directed by the Quality Director.
- Lead the QC and document control team to ensure food quality and safety.
- Oversee process checks across production, packaging, sanitation, and warehouse functions, including GMP, metal detection, labeling, hygiene, and weight verification.
- Oversee pest control program and respond to pest-related issues.
- Taste products to ensure acceptability.
- Maintain open communication and collaboration with other departments, encourage feedback, and update teams on changes.
- Coordinate with other Quality Managers and FSQS department for procedural alignment.
- Lead site management meetings to improve collaboration, communication, and plant efficiencies.
- Manage daily team operations to achieve operational success.
- Monitor attendance, approve vacation requests, and conduct incident investigations.
- Issue disciplinary actions when needed and perform other duties as assigned.
- Follow health and safety rules, GMP, food safety, and food defense guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Food Science or related field (e.g., chemistry, microbiology).
- 10 years in the food industry with at least 3 years of managerial/supervisory experience.
- Experience in implementing and managing food safety systems against GFSI standards (BRC preferred).
- HACCP qualification (preferably advanced level).
- Internal auditing training.
- Experience leading third-party GFSI audits.
- Knowledge of Canadian food safety regulations (SFCA); US regulations (FSMA/FSVP) is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience in training and public speaking.
- Results-driven with strong planning, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and excellent communication skills.
