Job summary

Express Employment Professionals - Ottawa East is seeking a detail-oriented Purchaser for a 6-month contract to support our client in the manufacturing sector in Ottawa. You will source and purchase paper, ink, and packaging, negotiate with suppliers, and manage raw material inventory to keep production running smoothly.

The role reports to the Plant Manager and requires strong negotiation, ERP experience, and the ability to work both on the production floor and in an office setting; starting

Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent; post-secondary education in Business, Supply Chain Management, or an SCMP designation is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain management, preferably within the manufacturing industry
  • Strong proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, ERP systems, and purchasing or inventory management software
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating contracts, evaluating supplier performance, and managing raw material inventory levels
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills, with the ability to resolve vendor issues and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both in an office setting using computer-based systems and on the production floor while adhering to safety requirements, including the use of steel-toe footwear.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and support operational objectives

Responsibilities

  • Source, procure, and issue purchase orders for paper stock, inks, and other production materials in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, negotiating pricing, terms, and service agreements to secure competitive costs and reliable supply
  • Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and production supplies to prevent stock shortages while minimizing excess inventory and carrying costs
  • Verify incoming material specifications for accuracy and quality, and coordinate vendor returns and corrective actions when required
  • Develop and implement purchasing strategies, policies, and best practices to improve supply chain efficiency, cost control, and overall profitability
  • Participate in daily production planning meetings to provide updates on material availability, inventory status, and potential supply chain risks
  • Evaluate material lead times and availability to support production schedules and ensure on-time customer deliveries
  • Track procurement performance metrics, analyze purchasing trends, monitor supplier KPIs, and prepare reports to support data-driven decision-making
  • Collaborate closely with production, operations, and scheduling teams to align procurement activities with business requirements and customer expectations
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, cost savings, and supplier performance enhancements across the supply chain

Job description

Our client, a well-established leader in the manufacturing and production industry, is seeking a detail-oriented and results-driven Purchaser to join their team on a 6-month contract, with the potential for extension or permanent employment.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing procurement activities, sourcing and purchasing raw materials such as paper, ink, and packaging supplies, negotiating supplier agreements, and maintaining optimal inventory levels. Your focus will be ensuring uninterrupted production operations while maximizing cost efficiency and supplier performance.

Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, the Purchaser plays a key role in supporting production planning, inventory management, and overall supply chain effectiveness to meet operational and customer requirements.

The starting wage for this position ranges between $24.00 - $28.00 per hour, depending on experience, skills and credentials.

Schedule:

Monday to Friday – 8:30am to 5:00pm
