Job summary

Strathcona County in Alberta is seeking seasonal Public Works Labourers for the 2026/2027 winter maintenance season, October to March. These are multiple full-time seasonal positions lasting up to 6 months.

You will assist in road and sidewalk construction and repair, perform snow removal, operate light trucks and hand/power tools, and maintain on-site safety and communications with the crew and the public.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Related municipal experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to work with hand and/or power tools and light motor vehicles.
  • Basic knowledge of OH&S regulations, safe work practices, and precautions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in construction and repair of roads, fences, signs, sidewalks, and related duties; assist in snow and ice removal.
  • Operate ½ ton and 1-ton trucks; may transport tools with a small trailer.
  • Use hand/power tools and light equipment (shovels, rakes, brooms, weed whippers, drills, blowers, snow blowers).
  • Serve as flag person to direct traffic at worksites.
  • Load/unload materials and equipment; perform site, shop, and vehicle clean-up.

Job Description

Public Works Labourer's will assist the Transportation Engineering and Operations department with winter operations during the 2026/2027 winter maintenance season (October to March).


This posting is for multiple, seasonal full-time positions for up to 6 months.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the construction and repair of roads, fences, signs, sidewalks, retaining walls (including brush removal, piling, painting, and other related duties), as well as assist in the removal of snow and ice from pathways, trails and bus stops

  • Operate ½ ton and 1-ton trucks; may be required to transport tools and equipment using small trailer

  • Operate hand and/or power tools and light equipment such as shovels, rakes, brooms, weed whippers, drills, backpack blowers, walk behind snow blowers, etc.

  • Perform duties of a flag person to direct traffic through work/construction sites

  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks

  • Complete routine site, shop and vehicle clean-up

  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operation; perform minor repairs during operation and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisor

  • Maintain on-site communication with work crew members and good public relations with the general public, suppliers and other departments

  • Undertake work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and County policies, standards, and procedures

  • Attend daily safety meetings to gain knowledge of standard operating procedures and safe work plans; may participate in hazard assessments and incident reporting, as required

  • Carry out written or oral instructions and maintain records/work reports of assigned tasks

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others in a team environment

  • May be required to train, lead and oversee the work of lower level Labourers on performing safe and effective operations, as assigned


Qualificationsand Skills:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Related work experience in a municipal environment would be an asset

  • Ability to work with hand and/or power tools and light motor vehicles

  • Basic knowledge of OH&S regulations, safe work practices, and precautions (use of personal protection, safety equipment, resources, and hazard awareness)

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate leadership skills; capacity to provide and follow direction

  • Capable of carrying out both verbal and written instruction; ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness for extended periods of time

  • Basic computer skills and mobile device literacy


Conditions of Employment:


  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits

  • Shift work is required - this position works a rotating 12-hour shift of days and nights (7 days on/7 days off)

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, including adverse weather

  • Ability to perform physical labour which includes moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
