Job summary

shíshálh Nation seeks a part-time Public Works General Labourer to perform a variety of outdoor maintenance tasks across Nation facilities and infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast. Responsibilities include operating light and heavy equipment, basic construction and yard work, and supporting safety and maintenance programs.

The position requires a valid BC Class 5 license, a minimum Grade 10 education, and willingness to work Saturdays/Sundays with potential callouts.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clean abstract.
  • Occupational First Aid Level I and WHMIS certificates are assets.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in construction, landscaping, or maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation, construction and maintenance of Nation facilities.
  • Operate trucks to deliver materials and supplies.
  • Perform carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, cement and asphalt work as needed.
  • Maintain roads, parks, and other infrastructure; mow and trim fields.
  • Coordinate vehicle maintenance and support safety inspections.

Job description

The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Historically there were four main settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts’unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (Jervis Inlet) and tewankw near Porpoise Bay. shíshálh Nation is committed to innovation in program and service delivery designed to assist our members and community to achieve greater independence, wellness and self‑sufficiency. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion and practice of shíshálh culture, language and laws within our swiya.

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, the duties of the Public Works General Labourer include various manual labour tasks, predominantly outside. You will operate hand and power tools and equipment, such as lawn mowers, edgers/string trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers. You will work around heavy machinery, such as field mowers, backhoes, and cranes. Common tasks include maintaining or building roads, parks, sewage systems, cleaning, repairing/building/installing Nation structures and more. This position requires you to operate the Nation's equipment and vehicles safely and responsibly.

Note: This is a part‑time position – 2 full‑time days per week with additional hours, as needed from time‑to‑time.

The Candidate
  • Assist in the preparation, construction and maintenance of Nation facilities.
  • Operate light and heavy‑duty trucks to pick up and deliver materials/supplies.
  • Perform basic carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, cement, and asphalt work.
  • Perform yard and field maintenance, including mowing, edging/trimming and fertilizing fields.
  • Assist or be responsible for garbage collection from public waste bins, parks and the community.
  • Repair and maintain ditches, drains, roads, signs, sidewalks, and medians.
  • Plant, trim and clear fallen trees and prepare firewood.
  • Perform pre and post‑vehicle safety inspections and report any necessary repairs or concerns.
  • Responsible for the safe, effective use of the equipment to perform all jobs.
  • Coordinate vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist with construction projects and paving preparation.
  • Maintain roads in good condition for safe, hazard‑free driving by grading, ditching along roadsides, slope trimming, backfilling and filling washouts caused by heavy rain and winter breakup.
  • Clean streets; hauling, loading and unloading gravel.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
  • Minimum Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clean abstract.
  • Occupational First Aid Level I is an asset. A WHMIS Certificate is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in general construction, landscaping, and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the community and city is required.
  • Respect for, sensitivity towards, as well as knowledge and understanding of shíshálh culture and traditions.
  • Knowledge and previous experience operating various pieces of equipment, such as small tractors, chainsaws, jackhammers, compressors, tamping machines, snow blowers, lawnmowers and saws.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team. Ability to engage the public professionally and openly.
  • Willingness to work Saturdays and the occasional Sundays. Flexibility to respond to callouts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
