UNIT PROFILE:
The Forensic Psychiatry Program works towards restoring and maintaining the mental health and well-being of mentally disordered adult offenders while managing risk as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada and ordered by the Ontario Review Board. This multi-disciplinary team includes nursing and allied health professionals working together to provide a wide range of assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services. In this capacity, the Forensic Psychiatry Program provides clinical, risk, and medico-legal assessments, inpatient treatments in General and Secure environments, and outpatient treatment and community reintegration services/support for the Central-South region and Halton.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Forensic Psychologist plans, conducts, and supervises psychological services including evidence-based assessment, treatment, and consultation, in line with the mission and values of St. Joseph's Healthcare and within current best practices for clinical management of psychiatric forensic patients. The psychologist plans, coordinates, and provides related research and program evaluation activities. The forensic psychologist conducts evidence-based assessments and risk assessments for court and the Ontario Review Board. The forensic psychologist takes a leadership role in education, clinical training, and other academic activities within the program. The forensic psychologist practices within the scope of declared competencies registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Given that St. Joseph's Healthcare is affiliated with McMaster University, the forensic psychologist is expected to engage in appropriate teaching and research activities and hold a faculty appointment within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent) from an APA or CPA accredited graduate program (or equivalent).
  2. Registered, or eligible for registration, through the College of Psychologists of Ontario with identified competency in forensic psychology.
  3. One year post-doctoral clinical experience, including teaching and supervisory experiences at the undergraduate and graduate level required.
  4. Demonstrated track record of academic productivity (i.e., peer-reviewed funding, peer-reviewed publications, presentations at professional meetings).
  5. Demonstrated compliance with the ethical and professional practice standards of the profession.
  6. Demonstrated skills and experience in treatment, assessment, and research in relevant areas of practice.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, to collaborate with community resources and services, and to advocate for the needs of clients.
  8. Knowledge and proficiency in clinical research design and analysis.
  9. Skills and experience in clinical teaching, education, and research consistent with the requirements for faculty appointment to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University.
  10. Continuing academic productivity consistent with the requirements for future appointment to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  11. Demonstrated interpersonal and supervisory skills required for the supervision of students, interns, residents, psychometrists, staff from other healthcare disciplines, and psychologists and/or psychological associates registered for supervised practice by the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
  12. Advanced oral and written communication skills required for assessment reports, scholarly presentations, and scholarly publications.

Forensic Psychiatry Program-specific Qualifications:
• Evidence of understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada as it pertains to mentally disordered individuals.
• Demonstrated familiarity and understanding of Forensic specific Risk Assessment tools (i.e., HARM/AIS).
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of custody and caring in the clinical care of mentally disordered individuals.

Monday to Friday; days
