Job description

Position Summary

Excellent opportunity for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. Discover the rewards of career satisfaction working within a strong culture of teamwork while delivering excellence in care! In this position, you will be part of a dedicated team of psychiatrists providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the local community.

Experience or interest in DDMH is welcomed. Hospital work involves psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to 18 years of age, often admitted through the Emergency Department. The service is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with community-based program access. KGH hosts the Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, offering a specialized inpatient program for youth aged 12-17 with significant psychiatric symptoms such as psychosis, mood disorders, or anxiety disorders requiring extended assessment and treatment.

The inpatient unit has 8 beds and operates seven days a week, with length of stay ranging from 10 days to several weeks. Evaluation involves a multidisciplinary team including nurses, counselors, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, and psychiatrists, with active participation from adolescents, families, and community mental health services.

Responsibilities include patient assessment and treatment, collaboration with clinicians and managers, and contributing to program, policy, and procedure development. You will hold active staff privileges at RIH and serve as the Most Responsible Physician for admitted patients. Participation in the on-call schedule is expected. Community work involves supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services, including programs for youth transitioning to adulthood, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. Kelowna features a Foundry Centre providing health and wellness resources for youth aged 12-24.

This role also offers teaching opportunities with medical students and residents through the UBC Southern Medical Program. We welcome passionate and dedicated candidates, whether experienced or new graduates. Enjoy the lifestyle of living, working, and playing in a vibrant community.

Leadership development opportunities are available through the NAVIG8 Program, designed to foster early leadership skills in physicians.
