Job summary

Manitoba Hydro is hiring for a Protection Trainee in the Relay Protection & Control area. Trainees will begin in February 2027, complete a two-year program with field experience, and learn to install, maintain, and repair protective relaying and related systems.

The role is based at various locations across Manitoba with a strong emphasis on safety and procedure compliance. Applicants must have an Electrical Engineering Technology credential or equivalent, along with a Manitoba Class 5 license

Qualifications

• Diploma or CT TAM or TAC accredited program in Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence (intermediate or full) or equivalent.
• Ability to read schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Strong mechanical ability and technical aptitude with electrical/electronic equipment.
• Good colour perception and safety awareness.
• Physically capable of performing duties and relocating within Manitoba.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair protective relaying systems (line, generator, transformer, etc.).
• Support control metering and recording systems as part of relay protection.
• Travel to various locations across Manitoba and follow Safe Work Procedures.

Manitoba Hydro is recruiting Technologists for a career in Relay Protection & Control with employment to commence in February 2027. Those who currently meet the qualifications, or those who will be graduating with the required qualifications by January 2027 are invited to apply. Upon completion of a two-year training program that involves field experience and advanced theoretical and practical courses, you will install, maintain and repair all types of protective relaying (line, generator, transformer, etc.), control metering, and recording systems. Qualifications

• A diploma from an accredited Electrical Engineering Technology program, or Equivalent certification as an Engineering Technologist with the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM), or Completion of a Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) accredited Electrical Engineering Technology program.
• Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence (intermediate or full) or equivalent.
• Capable of interpreting schematics and wiring diagrams.
• High degree of mechanical ability.
• Aptitude for technical skills involving computer, electrical and electronic equipment.
• Accurate colour perception.
• Physically capable of performing all the duties of the position.
• Willing to relocate to various locations within Manitoba.

Salary Range
The range for the classification Protection Trainee is $31.46-$35.47 Hourly, $60,283.34-$67,969.46 Annually. Following successful completion of the training program, the journeyperson range for the classification is $43.91-$53.78 Hourly, $84,148.48-$103,055.42 Annually.
