Job summary

AltaLink in Calgary is hiring a Project Controls Analyst II (term position for 24 months) to support financial control across DA projects. You will prepare cost estimates, forecasts, and capital reporting, coordinating with PMs, EPCs, and finance to ensure accuracy and governance.

The role requires a post-secondary degree and at least five years of project controls experience, including familiarity with SAP and Primavera P6.

Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Degree or related combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience managing up to $100M and/or 10 complex projects.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Primavera (P6) is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of project management practice and experience in work and resource planning, budgeting, monitoring, analyzing and reporting.
  • Experience in preparing monthly status reports for project and program reviews, feedback to PMs and leadership.
  • Experienced in the preparation of detailed forecasts to support annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Strong analytical, communication, teamwork, decision making, detail oriented, adaptability/change management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and ensure applicable financial project controls on estimates, forecasts, billings and project close-out.
  • Be experts on core controls processes, systems, and financial transactions in estimating, forecasting, and cost performance.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Interface with Project Managers, schedulers and EPCM Services Providers to align cost estimates with schedules.
  • Assess change notices against AltaLink procedures and regulatory rules at project levels.
  • Support Project Manager and PMO in preparing cost estimates and change orders for approvals.
  • Assess validity and resolve discrepancies of EPC project invoices.
  • Prepare and ensure the integrity of capital cost reports using monthly analysis tools.
  • Setup and maintain projects in SAP per PMO standards.
  • Ensure change control management follows AltaLink procedures.
  • Provide QA and adherence to corporate Project Controls procedures.

Job Description:

Note: This position is a term position for 24 months.

The Project Controls group is part of the DA Project Support team and consists of Project Controls Analysts (PCAs), Project Accountant Administrators, Capital Reporting Analysts, and Project Governance. The group is responsible for the financial monitoring, control, and reporting of system and customer-funded projects, including AESO Direct Assign (DA) and Behind-the-Fence transmission projects, throughout the full project lifecycle from development and execution to closeout.

The Project Controls Analyst II reports to the Manager, Project Support – DA and plays a key role in supporting the execution of AltaLink’s DA portfolio. The PCA maintains project financial data, performs cost control activities, and collaborates closely with Project Management, Finance, Regulatory, and Procurement. The role also interfaces with external consultants, contractors, and EPC service providers, as required. The PCA provides critical support to Project Managers, functional teams, and management to ensure project costs are accurately managed, governance requirements are met, and project deliverables, schedules, and financial objectives are successfully achieved.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and ensure applicable financial project controls on estimates, forecasts, billings and project close-out.
  • Be experts on the core controls processes, systems, and financial transactions in the areas of estimating, forecasting, and cost performance. Ensure adherence to processes by other PCAs and PMs. Ensure compliance with AltaLink’s standards and policies by following processes and coaching PCA I’s on the processes.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Interface with Project Managers, schedulers and EPCM Services Providers to ensure alignment of cost estimates and cost forecasts with schedules.
  • Assess the effectiveness of change notices against AltaLink procedures and regulatory rules, at a project and program levels.
  • Support the Project Manager and PMO in preparing all cost estimates and change orders for stakeholder and customer approval.
  • Assess the validity and resolve discrepancies’ of EPC project invoices.
  • Prepare and ensure the integrity of capital cost reports issued by AltaLink By using the monthly analysis tools to ensure accuracy of accruals and forecasts.
  • Setup and maintain projects in SAP per PMO defined standards.
  • Ensure execution of change control management follows AltaLink procedures.
  • Provide quality assurance and adherence to corporate Project Controls procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.
Qualifications:
  • Post Secondary Degree or related combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience managing up to $100M and/or 10 complex projects.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and SAP modules: Finance, Controlling, Project Systems, Materials Management, and Plant Maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Primavera (P6) is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of project management practice and experience in work and resource planning, budgeting, monitoring, analyzing and reporting.
  • Knowledge of engineering design practices, procurement and construction is an asset.
  • Experienced in preparing monthly status reports for project and program reviews, feedback to the PMs and leadership.
  • Experienced in the preparation of detailed forecasts to support annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Strong analytical, communication, teamwork, decision making, detail oriented, adaptability/change management skills.
  • Effective communication skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
