Job summary

Fuze HR Solutions is seeking a Senior Project Accountant in Ottawa to lead financial management for large-scale construction projects. You will report to the Controller, collaborate with project teams, and ensure accurate forecasting, reporting, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

The role requires 4+ years in project accounting, strong Excel and ERP experience, and an ability to navigate complex project-based environments.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree in Accounting or Finance; equivalent experience considered.
• CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset.
• 4+ years of project accounting experience on large-scale projects is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee financial management of construction projects including profitability, WIP, and revenue recognition.
• Prepare and consolidate project financial reports per applicable accounting standards.
• Monitor costs, budgets, forecasts, and variances; identify financial risks.
• Review invoices for accuracy and compliance; support timely invoicing and payments.
• Provide regular updates on project performance to managers and stakeholders.
• Manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities and reporting.

Senior Project Accountant

Location: Ottawa

Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Salary Range: $85K – $105K

Position Overview

Our client is a well-established organization operating within the construction and building industry. They are seeking a Senior Project Accountant to join their finance team and provide accounting leadership and financial support across complex, large-scale projects.

Reporting to the Controller, this role will work closely with project managers, operations, vendors, clients, and other internal stakeholders to ensure accurate project financial management, reporting, forecasting, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the financial management of construction projects, including project profitability, percentage-of-completion forecasting, WIP, revenue recognition, and backlog reporting.
• Prepare and consolidate project financial reports in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
• Monitor project costs, budgets, commitments, and forecasts, identifying variances and potential financial risks.
• Review vendor and consultant invoices to ensure accuracy, proper allocation, and compliance with project requirements.
• Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies and support timely invoicing and payment processing.
• Monitor outstanding receivables and collections and provide reporting and follow-up as required.
• Partner with project teams to gather financial information and provide regular updates on project performance.
• Conduct regular cost reviews, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
• Support accounts payable activities and ensure invoices are processed accurately and efficiently.
• Review project P&L statements and ensure financial information is complete and accurate.
• Monitor project profitability, claims, and financial exposures, escalating risks where appropriate.
• Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including reconciliations and financial reporting.
• Provide financial guidance and insights to project managers, senior leadership, and operational stakeholders.
• Maintain compliance with internal controls, company policies, and applicable financial reporting requirements.
• Support project closeout activities and final financial reconciliations.
• Respond to internal and external audit requests and provide supporting documentation as required.
• Act as a key liaison between the finance team and project operations.
• Contribute to process improvements and other financial initiatives as required.

Qualifications & Experience

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; equivalent experience will also be considered.
• CPA designation or progress toward a professional accounting designation is an asset.
• 4+ years of relevant project accounting experience, ideally within construction, engineering, infrastructure, or a similar project-based environment.
• Experience working with large-scale commercial, institutional, industrial, or building projects is an asset.
• Strong understanding of project costing, WIP, percentage-of-completion accounting, revenue recognition, and project profitability.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, and other data analysis functions.
• Experience working with ERP or project accounting systems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with project teams, management, vendors, and other stakeholders.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
