The Program Therapist reports to the Programs Manager and collaborates as part of the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement, and evaluate programs, outings, and events that address residents’ physical, social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and cultural needs.
Responsibilities:
- Complete documentation and maintain accurate records, including program guides, participation tracking, monthly statistics, intake and quarterly documentation, MDS/RAPS, care plan updates, and assessments for residents' recreation and rehabilitation needs.
- Plan and execute programs based on resident assessments, introducing creative and innovative recreational activities regularly.
- Organize special events, community programs, and outings.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and adapt as needed.
- Assess equipment needs and ensure residents have access to appropriate assistive devices (e.g., wheelchair, walker).
- Participate in department, unit, and multidisciplinary care meetings.
- Maintain effective communication and positive relations with residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
- Keep posters, notices, and calendars current, attractive, and legible for residents.
- Coordinate media notices about programming with the Programs Manager.
- Develop and sustain community contacts and resources.
- Collaborate with community agencies to deliver programming.
- Understand and contribute to quality indicators used by the Home, including public reporting and improvement efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary diploma, degree, or certificate in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, gerontology, or related fields from an Ontario post-secondary institution, or equivalent from another jurisdiction.
- Or, in the Home's judgment, possess the skills, knowledge, and experience to perform the duties effectively.
- Experience working with seniors, familiarity with GPA, PIECES, U FIRST, and statements from Butterfly.
- Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs.
- Proficiency in computer skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of RAI-MDS; AIS certification is preferred, or to be completed within one year of hire.
- Second language skills (Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, Eastern European languages) are an asset.
- CPR certification.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy and turn tasks into positive social interactions.
- Commitment to legal and ethical standards, promoting residents' rights, and risk management.
- Current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Background Check, or willingness to obtain.
- Proof of TB testing or chest X-ray as per health regulations.
- Two supervisory references.
- COVID-19 vaccination required.
