Position Summary

The Program Manager supports the Conservation Policy and Planning business unit. They report to and work closely with the Director, Science & Research. They work independently and collaborate with NCC staff in Conservation Policy and Planning, in other business and operating units, and with contractors and partners. Responsibilities include financial and administrative management of the programs in their area of responsibility; coordinating and tracking partnerships with other organizations or subject-matter experts outside NCC (which may include managing the fellowship program); and promoting the use of evidence for conservation decisions.

The Program Manager must independently manage multiple projects and deliverable priorities in parallel. They must identify and evaluate the implications of decisions across multiple NCC business and operating units and for partners.

The Program Manager makes recommendations to the Director, Science & Research about processes and criteria to evaluate the alignment of potential projects and partnerships with NCC organizational goals, how they can be improved, and how they can be optimized and operationalized. They will have the skills to organize and facilitate multidisciplinary teams and direct the delivery of projects. They must be able to see the big picture and implement high-level strategies and be able to advance multiple competing priorities.

This is a three-month contract with the possibility of a three-month extension, starting as soon as possible. There may be occasional travel within Canada.

Position Requirements

These skills, attributes, and experiences are required:

  • Post-secondary education.
  • Two years of professional experience, in addition to education.
  • Strong program management, including coordinating or managing multiple concurrent projects to support organizational goals.
  • Outstanding ability to collaborate and adapt to achieve results.
  • Results-oriented and accountable to outcomes.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, logistics, finance, and budgeting skills.
  • Excellent financial management, including supporting the development of budgets, and tracking annual and projected budgets, expenditures, and forecasts, and making recommendations to the Director about efficient use of funds.
  • Grant administration, design, and implementation, including assisting with proposals, reports, and other documentation.
  • Experience developing and managing project-related documents, ensuring that program and project information is up-to-date and accessible to various audiences.
  • Well-developed communication skills (writing, speaking, listening) for a variety of audiences, including the ability to prepare high-quality briefing notes, scopes of work, reports, and presentations.
  • Proficient at synthesizing and communicating complex information, including consideration of audience knowledge and needs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to make in-scope decisions independently with sound judgement, and find and assess a diversity of solutions when needed.
  • Proactive approach, including the ability to anticipate and plan for future needs, identify gaps, trends, and efficiencies, and seek opportunities to maximize impact.
  • Demonstrates commitment and actions that advanceequity, diversity, and inclusion in impactful ways.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365.

These Skills, Attributes, And Experiences Are Preferred

  • Post-secondary education in conservation-related or interdisciplinary science.
  • Five years of professional experience, in addition to education.
  • Program and project management designation or certificate (e.g., PMP).
  • Familiar with Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge, and NCC’s LRM/LIS software.
  • Familiar with quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and software.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to manage through influence.
