Job summary

Red Door Shelter in Toronto is seeking a Weekend Program Manager to oversee on-site shelter operations, staff and volunteers on Saturdays and Sundays, ensuring safe, compassionate service delivery and crisis response.

This 18-month part-time contract (14 hours/week) requires post-secondary education in Social Services and at least two years coordinating client services and supervising staff; compensation is CAD 42.03–45.93 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, with benefits including HCSA and EAP.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Services or related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience coordinating or delivering client services and supervising staff.
  • Eagerness to develop knowledge of shelter services and resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with teams.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises programming and services to meet standards through staffing and supplies.
  • Manages weekend staffing levels and ensures safe staffing ratios.
  • Responds to crises, incidents, and emergencies as required.
  • Completes incident reports and escalates issues as appropriate.
  • Oversees weekend admissions, discharges, and client concerns.
  • Ensures health and safety of clients, staff, and volunteers; arranges for maintenance or security as needed.
  • Plans and supports weekend programming for families and children.
  • Supervises weekend program staff and volunteers, with performance management and scheduling.

Overall Responsibility:

The Weekend Program Manager is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of services and programs in the shelter on weekends. As the Program manager on site during the weekend, this position oversees day-to-day shelter operations, responds to crises and incidents, and directly manages and supervises Staff and Volunteers. This position works Saturdays and Sundays.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates and supervises the ongoing provision of quality designated programming and services, and ensures that established standards for program and shelter service delivery are met through adequate staffing and availability of appropriate supplies.
  • Manages staffing levels on weekends, including responding to staff call-outs and arranging relief or agency coverage to maintain safe staffing ratios.
  • Manages and leads the assigned portfolio to ensure successful outcomes for clients, and responds to crises, incidents, and emergencies as required.
  • Completes incident and serious occurrence reports in line with Red Door policy and the Toronto Shelter Standards, and escalates issues to the Senior Client Service Manager or senior leadership as appropriate.
  • Oversees weekend admissions, discharges, and client concerns in line with Red Door policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the health and safety of clients, staff, and volunteers, including following emergency procedures and arranging for maintenance or security support as needed.
  • Plans and supports weekend programming and activities for families and children.
  • Supervises weekend Program Staff (Childcare and Shelter Support, as assigned) through performance management processes, and maintains communication systems that promote collaborative working relationships.
  • Evaluates and implements training and development plans, maintains staff and program schedules, and reviews and approves staff time records for bi-weekly payroll.
  • Provides a written weekend handover report to the Senior Client Service Manager and weekday management team, summarizing incidents, staffing, and outstanding client matters.
  • Supervises weekend volunteers, ensuring they receive orientation, direction, and guidance so that their experience is positive and enriching for them and for the clients at Red Door.
  • Collaborates with the Volunteer Coordinator in matching and placing weekend volunteers as required.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation as required.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Social Services or related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience coordinating or delivering client services and supervising staff.
  • Eagerness to develop a solid knowledge of shelter services and government and community resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive and collaborative working relationships with individuals and teams.
  • Good conflict management and dispute resolution skills
  • Good decision-making skills with the ability to motivate and direct others.
  • Sound judgment and excellent problem-solving/crisis management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate PC skills in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Willingness to embrace the non-profit culture.
  • Motivated to work in a non-profit environment.
