Job summary

Jobtailor in Canada seeks an experienced Naval Architect to deliver engineering services for Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels and Joint Support Ships. You will conduct surveys, investigations, and develop repair specifications, maintenance instructions, tests, and trials.

The role requires 4+ years maritime experience, eligible for P Eng designation, and the ability to obtain Canadian NATO Secret clearance. Occasional travel and work on ships in confined spaces are expected.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in naval architecture.
  • Minimum 4 years maritime experience in ship repair, ship building or ship operations.
  • Strong technical knowledge with ability to make technical decisions.
  • Eligible for P Eng designation in Nova Scotia.
  • Experience with defense contractors or Canadian Armed Forces.
  • Experience supporting an operational military asset.
  • Eligibility for Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Ability to obtain Canadian NATO Secret clearance.
  • Willing to work aloft and in confined spaces on ships.
  • Willing to travel domestically or internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering services for Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels and Joint Support Ships supporting the Royal Canadian Navy.
  • Conduct surveys and technical investigations.
  • Develop repair specifications and preventive/corrective maintenance instructions.
  • Develop and oversee tests and trials.
  • Provide direction during corrective maintenance.
  • Conduct failure analysis and develop solutions for structural, equipment, and system malfunctions.
  • Prepare documented work scopes for external resources including OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, and specialist service providers.
  • Coordinate work with Mechanical, Electrical, C4, and Naval Architecture staff and subcontractors.
  • Support Coastal and Central Engineering groups.
  • Improve Preventive Maintenance Plans.
  • Provide technical advice for operation and maintenance of structures, systems, and equipment.
  • Analyze requirements for product baseline changes.
  • Support the Ottawa Engineering Team with the Engineering Change process.
  • Perform problem investigation, requirements analysis, design calculations, obsolescence assessments, and risk/hazard assessments.
  • Report to the Engineering Services Lead and liaise with the Service Delivery group to support defect resolution.
  • Complete assigned tasks within Thales quality, commercial, time, and cost requirements.

Job description

Requirements
  • An Engineering degree in naval architecture
  • Minimum of 4 years maritime experience in Ship Repair, Ship Building or Ship Operational Experience
  • Strong technical knowledge with ability to make technical decision
  • Eligible for P Eng designation in Nova Scotia
  • Previous experience working with a defense contractor or the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Experience supporting an operational military asset
  • Above average Microsoft Windows application experience, communications and interpersonal skills
  • All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under Canadian and/or US export regulations
  • Eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program
  • Able to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance
  • Willing to work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships
  • Willing and able to undertake inspections involving bending and twisting
  • Willing to work 40 hours per week
  • Occasional domestic or international travel may be required
