Job summary

Thales, located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is seeking a Program Engineer – Electrical to support Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy. The ideal candidate will develop and manage electrical system documentation while working closely with various teams.

This role requires a minimum of 5 years of marine engineering experience and a bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering. The position offers a hybrid work model and an annual compensation ranging from $85,000 to $120,000 CAD.

Position Summary

Program Engineer – Electrical – Support for Non-Combatant In‑Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy, mainly the AOPS and JSS In‑Service (AJISS) Program. As part of the AJISS Engineering team, this role supports the Coastal Support team and the Service Delivery team with the management of defects for the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPVs) and Joint Support Ships (JSS). Additional support may be called for the Minor War & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) program, involving defect rectification, surveys, and engineering changes.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Develop and review electrical and electronic system technical documentation, including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions.
  • Conduct technical investigations into problems associated with electrical system, equipment and/or software issues, including root cause analyses, risk assessments and solution development.
  • Prepare documented work scopes for defect investigation/resolution, suitable for solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers.
  • Develop and/or approve technical work instructions.
  • Coordinate with other Thales staff (Mechanical, Combat Systems, Hull Engineering and Naval Architecture) and/or subcontractors to achieve agreed outcomes within delegated authorities.
  • Analyze requirements associated with baseline changes to the ship’s configuration, equipment and software.
  • Conduct electrical load design calculations.
  • Support the Engineering Team for the engineering change process.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated professional marine work experience within the last 10 years.
  • Language: English (Essential).
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8 years of demonstrated professional marine work experience within the last 15 years.
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
  • Experience delivering marine in‑service support of operational assets.
  • Experience working with a defense contract.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira.
  • Language: French (Desirable).
Special Position Requirements
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week.
  • Work Location: Hybrid – Will be required to work from the Thales office or the dockyard (approximately 80 %) and home (approximately 20 %).
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships.
Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is $85,000 to 120,000 CAD per year.
