Job summary

Thales Canada in Halifax is seeking a Naval Architect intern/co-op for Fall 2026 to support non-combatant in-service programs for the Royal Canadian Navy. You will work with Naval Architects, LCMMs, and engineering staff to troubleshoot ship systems and manage technical data packages.

The role involves technical investigations, documentation preparation, data package validation, and design change support while ensuring compliance with hull classifications and polar/naval codes.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a Canadian university as a Bachelor of Engineering student in Naval Architecture.
• Prior experience with preparing technical reports is preferred.
• Education: Senior Naval Architecture student preferred, junior students considered.

Responsibilities

• Conduct technical investigations into ship equipment and system malfunctions, with solution development.
• Prepare and review technical documentation and baseline updates.
• Validate naval data packages and support hull/ship system audits.
• Prepare and update design change documentation including drawings and installation/test instructions.
• Draft work scopes for quotations to external vendors and service providers.
• Carry out naval architecture tasks: requirements analysis, weight/moment assessments, risk assessments, and lifting certifications.

Naval Architect Intern/Co op

Position Summary

Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Architect student for Fall of 2026 to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Working closely with the Naval Architects, Engineers, Life Cycle & Materiel Managers (LCMMs), and other technical specialists in the Thales LCMM & Engineering Team, the Naval Architect Student provides technical support to various ships and assets of the Royal Canadian Navy. In this role, the individual will gain valuable working experience with troubleshooting technical issues with ship systems, working with ships technical data package, and other LCMM activities.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Naval Architect Student will report to the Engineering Services Manager and support the Thales Engineering staff on various technical activities, including but not limited to:

• Technical investigation into problems associated with ships equipment and/or system malfunction, including failure analysis and solution development;
• Preparing and reviewing technical documentation and supporting baseline documentation updates;
• Technical data package validation activities including support to physical configuration audits of ship systems and equipment;
• Support the preparation and updating of design change documentation including manufacturing drawings, installation instructions and test and trials documentation;
• Prepare documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as Original Equipment Manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
• Conduct detailed naval architecture tasks, including:
• Requirements analysis;
• Material compatibility investigation;
• Research and review of equipment/system maintenance documentation;
• Failure analysis;
• Risk and hazard assessments;
• Weight & moment assessments;
• Support management of lifting appliance certification and testing; and
• Assure compliance with hull related Classification Society, Naval Ship Code and Polar Code requirements

Minimum Requirements

• Student enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Program in Canadian University, with a focus in Naval Architecture .

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with the preparation of technical reports
• Microsoft Office Suite
• Education: Senior Student in Naval Architectural Engineering preferred, though interested junior students will also be considered.

Physical Demands

• Predominantly office work but if located in Halifax, the individual may be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
• May be required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting

Special Position Requirements

• 40 hours per week
• Work at shipyards and onboard ships.
• Potential occasional domestic travel.
• Halifax, Nova Scotia based position. The student will work from the Thales Halifax Office in Burnside, and may occasionally have to visit the DND Facilities and HMC Dockyard in Halifax to attend the ships during maintenance work periods.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $45,000 - $55,000 -65,000 CAD Annual.
