Main Purpose and Function
The Program Assistant III works independently or within a team of staff in planning and implementing a component of a program or service area(s) under the direction of a supervisor. This is routine and introductory recreation programming work assisting a Recreation Programmer II in overseeing a segment of a program area.The position coordinates and participates in the operation of seniors and special events, rentals, and monitors activity areas to ensure the program or activities are running smoothly and performs a variety of clerical duties related to the work.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the delivery of a fitness centre, rentals, programs and participates in the planning of programs
  • Monitors programs and activity areas to ensure that the programs or activities are running smoothly
  • Plans, assigns, reviews and supervises one or more Program Assistant I or II positions.
  • Prepares and maintains records related to assigned programs and activities
  • Enforces rules and regulations and deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observe these
  • Provides information regarding programs, activities and facilities to interested groups and individuals
  • Assists in developing supply requests and submits maintenance and repair requests to the supervisor
  • Performs related work as required
  • Supervises volunteers and other support staff.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of an approved diploma course in recreation and some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • First Aid Certification (at minimum Emergency First Aid with CPR C and AED)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Sound knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations and rules applicable to the work performed
  • Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of recreational programs and activities as related to the work performed
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and development.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures including experience using ActiveNet, Word, Excel and Publisher.
  • Knowledge of basic marketing and advertising strategies
  • Ability to coordinate, deliver and participate in various special events and oversee activities and programs offered in an assigned area
  • Ability to plan, assign, review and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency
  • Ability to maintain records and perform a variety of routine clerical tasks related to the work performed
  • Experience in monitoring a budget and preparation of financial reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external customers

A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.

Drivers License and Record Checks

  • Driver’s License for Province of British Columbia is required, as applicable
  • Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:
    • Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
    • Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
    • If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
