Job description

Company Overview

Winnipeg Jewish Theatre (WJT) is the only professional theatre company in Western Canada exclusively dedicated to Jewish stories, culture, and voices. Over the decades, WJT has grown into a vital arts organization in Manitoba and beyond, commissioning, developing, and producing new Jewish-Canadian works, while also providing creative opportunities for artists in theatre and related disciplines.

WJT strives to integrate the particularity of Jewish narratives with the universality of human stories. In alignment with Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), WJT aspires to foster empathy, connection, and cultural understanding through theatre.

Job Description

Position: Full-time, 35-40 hours per week

Location: Hybrid, some days remote with regular travel around Winnipeg and required on-site presence at the performance venue during productions, technical rehearsals, and meetings

Start Date: Immediate

Winnipeg Jewish Theatre is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and hands-on Production Manager to oversee the technical production of our season, including set, lighting, sound, and stage management departments.

Working closely with the Artistic & Managing Director and the Company Manager, the Production Manager is responsible for planning and executing all technical elements of WJT productions, from pre-production through strike. This includes coordinating design teams, hiring and supervising technical and production staff, managing production schedules and budgets, and ensuring a safe, well-run production process from first rehearsal to closing night.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technical theatre professional who thrives on problem-solving, enjoys leading a production team, and is excited to help bring the stories of a small, collaborative arts organization to life.

Responsibilities Include

  • Overseeing all technical aspects of productions, including set construction, lighting, sound, and stage management.
  • Developing and managing production schedules, ensuring deadlines are met from pre-production through strike.
  • Hiring, scheduling, and supervising technical and production staff, including designers, technicians, and stage crew.
  • Coordinating and communicating with directors and designers to ensure their vision is realized within the production's scope, timeline, and budget.
  • Managing production budgets, tracking expenses, and sourcing materials, equipment, and rentals as needed.
  • Overseeing load-in, technical rehearsals, load-out, and strike for each production.
  • Ensuring the performance venue and production spaces meet health and safety standards.
  • Liaising with rental venues and outside contractors as required.
  • Maintaining production inventory, tools, and equipment.
  • Supporting general administrative duties related to production planning as required.

The Ideal Candidate Might Have

  • Proven experience in technical theatre production, including set, lighting, sound, and/or stage management.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience supervising crew or production staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple productions, schedules, and budgets simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and adaptable under pressure.
  • Good working knowledge of theatrical rigging, lighting, and sound equipment, and general venue safety practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Comfort using email, word processing software, spreadsheets, and production scheduling tools.
  • A love of theatre, arts, culture, and community engagement.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or small arts organization is an asset.

Position Details

  • This is a full-time position of 35-40 hours per week.
  • Some evening/weekend availability and long days will be required during productions, technical rehearsals, and special events.
  • This role does not have a dedicated desk at the WJT office. Desk-based work (scheduling, budgeting, communications) can be done remotely, while the nature of the job requires regular travel around Winnipeg to coordinate logistics, deliveries, and facilitate between vendors, venues, and crew.
  • Reliable transportation is required, as the role involves moving between multiple locations regularly.
  • Salary is $50K, with 2 weeks paid vacation annually.
Hiring Statement

Winnipeg Jewish Theatre is committed to diversity in the workplace, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply. As one of only two professional Jewish theatres in Canada, WJT is proud to provide meaningful opportunities for artists, arts workers, and members of the broader Jewish community, while also welcoming collaborators from all backgrounds. We invite anyone with access needs or requiring accommodation in the application process to contact us.
