CMI Mulching, a manufacturer of forestry mulching equipment, is hiring a new production manager as part of the structural development of its opérations department.
We are looking for a Production Manager, a hands-on leader, to oversee our heavy machinery manufacturing teams (welding, assembly, hydraulics and engine mounting) in a context of rapid expansion. Planning and quality control are already handled by dedicated resources: your role is to make sure the plan is carried out on the shop floor, safely, rigorously and efficiently.
You will spend about 90% of your time on the production floor, working alongside team leads and employees, and about 10% in meetings. You will be the go-to person for discipline, occupational health and safety, and coaching, and you will play an active role in implementing our new ERP and new processes.
Key Responsibilities
Shop-floor presence and rigorous production follow-up
- Be present on the floor every day: track work progress, quickly identify issues and resolve them with the teams.
- Ensure execution of the production plan set by planning, in close collaboration with team leads.
- Lead start-of-shift meetings and visual management routines (boards, KPIs, daily priorities).
- Rigorously follow up on variances (delays, part shortages, technical issues) and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Maximize the use of labour, equipment and workstations.
Leadership, coaching and discipline
- Supervise, support and develop the welding, assembly and hydraulics team leads.
- Provide day-to-day coaching on the floor: feedback, skills development and accountability.
- Manage disciplinary matters in a fair, consistent and documented manner, in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Enforce company rules (attendance, schedules, work methods, housekeeping).
- Take part in welcoming, onboarding and training new employees in a context of sustained hiring.
- Conduct performance reviews and manage schedules and overtime as needed.
Occupational health and safety (OHS)
- Be the leading safety ambassador on the floor and enforce safety rules and the use of protective equipment.
- Carry out regular safety inspections and walkthroughs.
- Lead investigations and analyses of accidents and near misses and follow up on corrective measures.
- Ensure employees are trained on equipment and safe work procedures (lockout, lifting, welding, etc.).
- Actively participate in the OHS committee and ensure compliance with CNESST requirements.
Expansion, ERP and new processes
- Take part in implementing the new ERP (SyteLine): testing, training shop-floor users and fine-tuning.
- Ensure rigorous use of the ERP on the floor (production reporting, time, material consumption).
- Contribute to the design and rollout of new processes and work standards as part of the plant expansion.
- Work with industrial engineering to implement improvements (Lean, 5S, workstation redesign).
- Work closely with planning, quality, industrial engineering, engineering and supply chain.
- Act as the link between the floor and management: communicate information, issues and needs clearly and quickly.
- Track and present key production indicators (productivity, on-time delivery, OHS, absenteeism).
Desired Profile
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial production environment.
- 2+ years in a supervisory or team management role on a production floor.
- Experience in disciplinary management and occupational health and safety.
- Experience in heavy machinery, agricultural equipment or metal fabrication, a major asset.
- Experience in a growing company or during an ERP implementation, an asset.
What we are looking for
- A hands-on leader, present and approachable, who would rather be on the floor than behind a desk.
- Ability to be firm and fair: enforce rules while keeping teams engaged.
- A talent for coaching and developing people.
- Rigour, strong organizational skills and a commitment to follow-through.
- Good understanding of welding, mechanical assembly and hydraulic processes.
- Comfortable with computer tools (ERP, Microsoft Office suite) and open to change.
- Knowledge of Lean and 5S principles and CNESST requirements.
- Strong communication skills with both shop-floor employees and management.
What Success Looks Like
After 6 months:
- Know all CMI product lines and the key manufacturing and assembly steps.
- Have built trusting relationships with team leads, employees and other departments.
- Have put daily follow-up routines in place on the floor (meetings, boards, KPIs).
- Independently manage disciplinary matters and OHS issues.
- Have actively contributed to the ERP go-live on the floor.
After 12 months:
- Have established a culture of rigorous follow-up and accountability within the teams.
- Have helped team leads grow through regular coaching.
- Have contributed to a measurable reduction in incidents and near misses.
- Have taken part in the successful rollout of new processes related to the plant expansion.
- Track and present reliable production indicators to management.
What We Offer
- A key, hands-on role at the heart of a fast-growing manufacturing company.
- The opportunity to shape how things are done in a new plant.
- An established support team: planning, quality, industrial engineering and supply chain.
- Robust, recognized products made right here in Quebec.
