Job summary

Inter Pipeline is seeking a senior Process Safety Engineer to lead and advise on all process safety activities at the Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC). Located near Fort Saskatchewan, the role reports to the Manager, Process & Operations Engineering within the HPC Technical Services team.

You will coordinate MOC, support PHA/HAZOP activities, maintain PHAs, and drive technical standards and safety documentation across the site. This is a 12-month contract based in Alberta, Canada.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of related P.Eng experience.
  • Degree in Risk Management, Process Safety, or Engineering (Process).
  • Ability to work independently and manage schedules.
  • Attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret legislation for safety and risk management.
  • Experience facilitating PHA techniques (HAZOP/HAZID/What-if) is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and steward MOC activities with project, operations and engineering teams.
  • Support Process Hazard Assessments (PHA), including what-if, HAZOP/HAZID and other risk methods.
  • Maintain historical PHA database and revalidate PHAs.
  • Lead development and maintenance of Process Safety standards and documentation.
  • Oversee Process Safety Information such as P&IDs, PFDs and diagrams.
  • Review incidents and support investigations related to Process Safety.
  • Support risk management programs and Operations Management System for HPC.
  • Provide oversight in compliance and site-wide safety governance.

Description

Located at the Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC) just north of Fort Saskatchewan, the Process Safety Engineer will report to the Manager, Process & Operations Engineering, within the HPC Technical Services team.

The Process Safety Engineer is a senior professional responsible for leading and advising on all process safety related activities at HPC.

Key Activities And Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with project, operational and engineering teams in coordinating and stewarding management of change (MOC) activities, including risk assessments and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR)
  • Support and/or facilitate, Process Hazard Assessment (PHA) activities which may include what-if reviews, hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and other risk assessment techniques
  • Develop and maintain a database of historical PHA studies, including tracking the resolution of hazard assessment action items, and coordinate the revalidation of existing Facility process hazard assessments (PHAs).
  • Lead the development and maintenance of technical standards, practices, and procedures as Owner of Process Safety documentation.
  • Provide oversight and guidance in maintaining Process Safety Information such as P&ID's, PFD's, Cause and Effect Diagrams etc.
  • Review and categorize incidents relating to Process Safety, and facilitate or support investigation of Process Safety Events
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of a fit for purpose operational risk management program that supports the HPC requirements and objectives.
  • Support the sustainment of the Operations Management System ensuring compliance and providing oversight.
Education, Skills And Experience
  • 10+ years of related P.Eng experience
  • Degree in the following will be considered: Risk Management, Process Safety, Engineering (Process)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage work schedules and activities in a coordinated manner.
  • Attention to detail, ability for problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret, understand legislation and translate it to a diverse audience in the context of safety and risk management.
  • Experience facilitating Process Hazard Analyses techniques such HAZOP, HAZID, What-if will be considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills including confident, supportive, collaborative, respectful
Hours

This is a contract position, 12 months (approximate)

Monday-Friday, 9 hours per day with every second Friday off

As this position is identified as security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of a criminal background check, fit-for-work medical with drug and alcohol testing, and driver's abstract with satisfactory results.
