Job summary

Mondi plc in Canada’s Alberta region seeks a Process Engineer to optimize mill production, enhance safety, and drive operational excellence. The role partners with operations, maintenance and engineering to deliver reliable performance and continuous improvement.

Based in Hinton, AB, this permanent, full-time position offers a comprehensive compensation package and opportunities to mentor engineers and operators while advancing process control knowledge and data-driven decision making.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Process, or related Engineering.
• Eligible for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in Alberta is an asset.
• Experience in pulp and paper or industrial/manufacturing environments preferred.
• Familiarity with process control systems and data tools (DCS, PI, Excel or similar).
• Experience supporting capital projects or process improvement initiatives.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to work in industrial environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and monitor KPIs, including downtime tracking and production loss reporting.
• Troubleshoot and analyze process and control issues to restore performance and prevent recurrence.
• Optimize operating conditions to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain safe, stable production.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement and cost-saving opportunities through process optimization, waste reduction, and energy efficiency.
• Collaborate with Operations to provide guidance on process control, operating parameters, and improvement opportunities.
• Establish, document, and maintain process best practices and process control functional specifications.
• Support capital project development and participate in maintenance turnarounds.
• Monitor key process variables to improve product quality, reduce variability, and ensure efficient operations.
• Mentor, train, and develop engineers and operators to strengthen process knowledge and decision-making.
• Actively pursue ongoing personal and professional development.

Role Summary:

The Process Engineer supports safe, efficient mill operations by optimizing production processes, improving performance, and resolving process and control issues. Reporting to the Superintendent Process Engineering, this role plays a key part in continuous improvement, capital project execution, and operational excellence while partnering closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.

Your Profile:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Process, or related Engineering discipline
• Eligibility for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in Alberta is an asset
• Experience in pulp and paper or industrial/manufacturing environments preferred
• Familiarity with process control systems and data tools (DCS, PI, Excel or similar)
• Experience supporting capital projects or process improvement initiatives
• Valid driver’s license and ability to work in industrial environments
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
