Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Software Engineer, Front End Web UI Platform based in Canada.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role focused on the frontend platform powering a large-scale web product used by millions of developers.

You will define technical direction across performance, accessibility, consistency, reliability, and frontend infrastructure.

Rather than owning a single product team, you will influence architecture and engineering practices across many teams and initiatives.

The role combines deep hands-on engineering with strategic thinking, cross-team leadership, and large-scale modernization.

You will design scalable patterns and paved paths that make frontend development faster, safer, and easier for engineers across the organization.

Success will depend on your ability to navigate complex, actively developed systems while building alignment and driving measurable outcomes.

This is an opportunity to shape the future of frontend engineering in a remote-first, highly collaborative, and technically ambitious environment.

Accountabilities
  • Own the technical direction of the web UI platform across performance, accessibility, consistency, availability, and frontend infrastructure.
  • Balance long-term architectural strategy with hands-on engineering execution and practical delivery.
  • Lead large, cross-team frontend initiatives and migrations, carefully sequencing work to minimize disruption to active product development.
  • Establish reusable frontend patterns, standards, tooling, and paved paths that can be adopted consistently across engineering teams.
  • Develop architecture proposals and technical designs, evaluate tradeoffs, and communicate recommendations clearly to engineering, product, and design leadership.
  • Drive modernization initiatives across a large and actively evolving frontend codebase, including migration, deprecation, and incremental adoption strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve web performance, frontend reliability, developer velocity, and overall user experience through systematic, data-driven approaches.
  • Collaborate with Principal and Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Design leaders to align technical priorities with business and customer needs.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels through architecture and design reviews, code reviews, technical discussions, and pairing.
  • Represent frontend platform priorities to senior leadership and help secure the alignment, resources, and support required to deliver strategic initiatives.
  • Build a deep understanding of frontend systems, infrastructure, and backend dependencies to make high-leverage technical decisions.
  • Measure and communicate the impact of platform initiatives, including improvements in performance, availability, infrastructure, developer productivity, and adoption of shared solutions.
Requirements
  • 9+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience through the applicable education and experience combinations; candidates with Associate's, Master's, Doctorate, or equivalent backgrounds may also qualify with the corresponding level of professional experience.
  • Proven experience maintaining and delivering production-grade software in one or more languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, C, C++, C#, Java, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
  • Deep expertise in React or Angular, including framework internals and server-side rendering.
  • Experience modernizing frontend systems within large, multi-team codebases.
  • Strong understanding of web performance, including Core Web Vitals, interaction latency, bundle size, rendering performance, and systematic performance optimization.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-team frontend migrations and large-scale rollouts involving sequencing, deprecation, adoption, and change management.
  • Strong knowledge of web platform fundamentals, including browser APIs, JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and modern frontend architecture.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards and the ability to incorporate accessibility into scalable frontend solutions.
  • Experience building or evolving design systems, shared component libraries, frontend platforms, or developer tooling adopted by multiple teams.
  • Strong architectural and systems-thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate complex technical tradeoffs and make pragmatic decisions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly when influencing engineers, product leaders, designers, and other senior stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and raise engineering quality through technical guidance, reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a large, distributed, and continuously evolving engineering organization.
  • Strong ownership mindset, customer focus, growth orientation, and commitment to inclusive collaboration.
Benefits
  • Fully remote opportunity within Canada.
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience, skills, and location.
  • Comprehensive employee benefits designed to support health, wellbeing, and financial security.
  • Generous learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Access to resources that support continued technical growth and career progression.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale frontend infrastructure and technologies used by a global developer community.
  • High level of technical ownership and influence over platform architecture and engineering standards.
  • Collaborative environment with experienced Principal and Staff Engineers, product leaders, designers, and engineering teams.
  • Remote-first culture designed to provide flexibility and enable employees to do their best work.
  • Inclusive workplace committed to diversity, accessibility, belonging, and equal opportunity.
  • Opportunity to contribute to ambitious initiatives involving AI, developer tooling, open source, and modern software development.
