Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Rock Mechanics Engineer to lead geomechanical analysis for open pit and underground mining projects across Canada. You will mentor professionals, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and drive safe, efficient design solutions that meet project goals.

You will apply numerical modelling and field interpretation to reduce geotechnical risk, develop design parameters, and help deliver reliable mine infrastructure while building strong client relationships.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in geological, mining, civil, or geotechnical engineering (rock mechanics asset).
• 10–15 years of rock mechanics experience in underground/open pit mining.
• Professional Engineer registration in Canada or eligible.
• Expertise in underground excavation design and slope stability.
• Proficiency with RS2, RS3, FLAC3D, PLAXIS or equivalents; limit equilibrium methods.
• Strong knowledge of mining methods, ground control, hydro-mechanical interactions.
• Ability to lead complex technical assignments and mentor teams.
• Clear communication and willingness to travel.

The Skills That Set You Apart

• A bachelor's degree in geological, mining, civil, or geotechnical engineering, or a closely related discipline; graduate education in rock mechanics or geomechanics is an asset.
• 10–15 years of relevant experience applying rock mechanics principles in underground and open pit mining environments.
• Professional Engineer registration in Canada, or eligibility to obtain registration.
• Advanced expertise in underground excavation design, slope stability, ground support systems, geotechnical site investigations, and structural geology interpretation.
• Proficiency with numerical modelling tools such as RS2, RS3, FLAC3D, PLAXIS, or equivalent software, together with experience applying limit equilibrium methods.
• Strong understanding of mining methods, ground control practices, geomechanical risk, and hydro-mechanical interactions across study, design, and implementation phases.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical assignments, communicate defensible recommendations to clients and stakeholders, and mentor multidisciplinary professionals.
• Clear technical writing and analytical capabilities, along with a valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to project and mine sites as required.

• AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $162,200 - $212,200
• MB & ON: $148,000 - $198,000
• NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $146,500 - $194,600
