Job summary

WSP in Canada is seeking a Senior Rock Mechanics Engineer to lead geotechnical studies for underground and open pit mining projects from Toronto, Sudbury or Montréal. You will provide technical leadership across a growing portfolio and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients.

You will apply rock mass characterization, design criteria, ground support recommendations, and stability assessments, while guiding numerical analyses and field programs to deliver safe, resilient operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mining, geological, geotechnical, or related engineering discipline.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration in Canada.
  • 8+ years of rock mechanics/mining geotechnical experience, underground focus.
  • Experience with rock mass characterization and geotechnical investigations.
  • Proficiency with Rocscience RS2/RS3/FLAC3D/EX3 or similar tools.
  • Travel to client sites; French language capability is asset.

  • Deliver rock mass characterization, design criteria, ground support recommendations, and stability assessments for excavations, stopes, headings, raises, shafts, crown pillars, mass excavations, and open pit slopes.
  • Guide kinematic, empirical, and numerical analyses that turn complex geological and geotechnical data into practical decisions for clients.
  • Advance safe, high-quality field programs encompassing core logging, televiewer surveys, packer testing, instrumentation, monitoring, and laboratory data interpretation.
  • Drive project success by managing scope, budgets, schedules, deliverables, technical quality, and multidisciplinary collaboration across mining, geology, hydrogeology, and engineering teams.

Turn Ground Insight into Safer Mining

Help solve complex geotechnical challenges across the mining lifecycle. Your expertise will shape practical, defensible solutions that improve excavation stability, manage risk, and support safer, more resilient operations.

Based in Toronto, Sudbury, or Montréal, you will contribute as a Senior Rock Mechanics Engineer within WSP's Mine Stability and Water team. You will provide technical leadership across a growing global portfolio of underground and open pit mining projects, working with multidisciplinary teams and clients throughout early studies, feasibility, detailed engineering, construction, and operations.

The Skills That Set You Apart
  • A bachelor's degree in mining, geological, geotechnical, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Canada.
  • 8+ years of relevant rock mechanics or mining geotechnical experience, including strong involvement in underground mining projects.
  • Demonstrated capability in rock mass characterization, geotechnical investigations, excavation stability, ground support design, and geotechnical risk management.
  • Experience applying numerical modelling and stability analysis tools such as RS2, RS3, FLAC3D, EX3, or other Rocscience software.
  • Experience with block cave, sub-level cave, large underground operations, open pit slope design, or slope performance evaluation is an asset.
  • Proven ability to lead field programs and developing professionals, produce clear technical reports, advise clients, and coordinate multidisciplinary project delivery.
  • Ability to travel to client sites as required; French language capability is considered an asset.

Compensation
  • AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $135,200 - $179,100
  • MB & ON: $123,300 - $169,800
  • NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $122,100 - $162,200
