Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to set the technical direction for the frontend platform behind GitHub.com. This is a systems role spanning performance, accessibility, and scale, with cross-team collaboration and architecture leadership.

You will align with engineering managers, product, and design leadership to drive platform initiatives that ship outcomes, improve velocity, and raise the ceiling for frontend capabilities across the organization.

Qualifications

• 11+ years of software engineering with production experience across multiple languages.
• Alternative paths exist: 10+ years with an associated degree in CS or related field, or 9+ with a Bachelor's, etc.
• Equivalent experience is acceptable if demonstrated by impact and scope.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for GitHub's web UI platform across performance, accessibility, consistency, and availability.
• Drive large cross-team initiatives and migrations, sequencing work to progress without disrupting product development.
• Establish patterns, standards, and paved paths for frontend development that scale across teams.
• Produce architecture and design proposals, evaluate tradeoffs, and align engineering, product, and design.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing.
• Represent frontend platform priorities to leadership to secure resources and support.
