Job summary

Okanagan Indian Band is seeking a part-time Preschool Bus Driver to transport students on established routes with careful supervision and safety oversight. The role requires maintaining a clean bus, performing pre/post trip inspections, and coordinating with school staff to ensure timely pickups and drop-offs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a calm, courteous approach with children, parents, and teachers, while adhering to transportation regulations and OKIB policies.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of clean driving record and safe driving experience.
  • Working knowledge of Federal and Provincial Transportation Regulations.
  • Valid Class 1/2 license with airbrake endorsement required.
  • Level One First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Transports students to/from school on confirmed routes and schedules.
  • Monitor and ensure safe loading/unloading, including crossing street when stopped.
  • Maintain bus cleanliness and perform pre/post trip inspections.
  • Attend to discipline and communicate with parents/administration as needed.
  • Provide emergency First Aid when necessary and report incidents promptly.
  • Collaborate with administration to determine efficient routes for diverse age groups.

Hours of work: 20 hours per week, split shift 7:30am – 9:30am/2:15pm – 4:15pm

JOB SUMMARY

The CIS/Preschool Bus Driver is responsible for the loading, unloading, transport, accounting for and supervision of passengers. They’re also responsible for maintaining bus cleanliness, conducting pre/post trip safety inspections, and completing associated records.

The CIS/Preschool Bus Driver must also provide excellent customer service to students, parents, guardians and school staff in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes ensuring pick up and drop off schedules for students and monitoring the attendance of students daily. The CIS/Preschool Bus Driver must make note of any discrepancies immediately and report on any discrepancies, or complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

It is critical for CIS/Preschool Bus Driver to operate the School Bus in a safe manner. Failure to ensure the safe passage of children/students to and from the school and Preschool may result in serious liabilities for the health and safety of our children.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Reports to the School Administrator (Principal/Vice Principal)

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Transports students to/from school in accordance with confirmed assigned routes and schedules
  • Extra hours may apply for field trips
  • Ensures that children are safe when boarding and leaving the bus, including crossing the street while the bus is stopped
  • Directs, monitors, and ensures compliance with safe loading, riding, and unloading procedures
  • Consults with parents, teachers, and school/preschool administration regarding student behavior and discipline
  • Completes and maintains bus cleanliness, maintenance, Pre and Post trip inspections, and regularly fuels school bus
  • Completes a full bus sweep at the end of every route to ensure safety measures are in place
  • Ensure that all vehicle documentation and insurance is updated and accurate
  • Reports defects to vehicle maintenance personnel, assists in assessing maintenance problems, and performs minor running maintenance and emergency repairs
  • Provides clear expectations for temporary bus drivers, including all operating procedures
  • Provide emergency First Aid when necessary
  • Communicates to School/Preschool Administration and parents when the bus cannot safely transport students
  • Provides student supervision at the school/preschool when required or directed
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Liaise between Cultural Immersion School/Snc’c’amala?tn and parents
  • Monitors Bus Cell Phone
  • Completes School Bus Discipline Memo’s when warranted and hands directly to parents or communicates by end of workday to parents that the Memo has been given
  • Submits updated Drivers License upon renewal to the School/Preschool administration
  • Submits updated Drivers Abstract in September of each school year
  • Develop and implement safe seating lists for students
  • Collaborates with administration to determine the most efficient bus route, accommodating for a diverse age range of young bus riders
  • Attends staff meetings when available and Professional Development training when required
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

Education

  • Valid Class 1 or Class 2 driver's license with airbrake endorsement
  • 5+ years of clean driving record and safe driving experience
  • Level One First Aid
  • Working knowledge of Federal and Provincial Transportation Regulations
  • Valid criminal record check for vulnerable populations

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of driving experience with children
  • Experience working with First Nations communities

CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE

$30.00 - $33.00 per hour dependent upon education and experience.

The successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check that includes the vulnerable sector and three references
